STUDENTS ATTEND BACK-TO-SCHOOL NIGHT

Families and students of all grades filled the halls of the main Oasis Academy building and the high school at Back to School Night on Aug. 14. The energy from students, families, and staff was felt throughout the buildings.

Students were able to meet their new teachers and see their new classrooms. Many families also brought school supplies with them.

Community organizations also attended the event to help bring awareness to families of resources available around Fallon. The Fallon Police Department, Churchill County Coalition, New Frontier Treatment, Churchill Banner Hospital, NAS Fallon, Churchill County 4-H,and Oasis parent organization Friends of Oasis Academy all set up tables and helped greet families.

“We are so grateful for the community organizations that attended. We know that community partners helped play a vital role during Back to School Night this year by bringing awareness to resources and support that enhance parental engagement and student success,” said Principal Rochelle Tisdale. “These organizations facilitate connections between families and the school. They encourage a collaborative environment that benefits the entire school community.”

Buster Bighorn was also on hand to welcome families and take photos with the mascot. A photo with Buster is a traditional start to the year for many families now.

Oasis Academy students began the school year on Monday.

YOUNGEST BIGHORNS PRACTICE BEFORE FIRST DAY

The first day of school for any student can be intimidating, but Oasis Academy tried to ease the nerves of its youngest Bighorns by holding Kindergarten Practice Day on Aug. 15.

The day is an induction for what Kindergarteners can expect for the rest of the year. Students dress in full Oasis uniform, bring a backpack, and pack lunch. The students are shown where to hang their backpacks, where their seats are, learn classroom expectations and are given a tour of the school.

The tour includes learning where the restrooms, cafeteria, and nurse’s office are located. All while practicing walking quickly down the halls in a straight line.

Keeping with the Oasis tradition starting last year, the class was given Oasis Academy shirts reading Bighorn Class of 2037. The shirts were worn on the first day of school and can be used as part of the student’s regular uniform attire.

“Kindergarten Practice Day is an exciting opportunity for students to familiarize themselves with their new learning environment,” said Tisdale.

The goal of the day is not only to introduce day-to-day habits for the students, but also has social emotional benefits as well.

“During this day, students engage in fun activities, meet their teachers and classmates, and explore the classroom, but there is more than just that,” Tisdale said. “All these things help to ease any anxieties about starting school and foster a sense of belonging. We want to make sure they feel part of the Bighorn herd.”
