After an impressive 27-0 win over Canyon Springs on Saturday, Carson High School football is hoping to make another statement Friday on the road at Spring Creek (0-1).

The Spartans of Spring Creek are hoping to bounce back from a 42-7 loss to Galena in their first game of the season.

Every first game of the season shows teams what they need to work on. For the Senators, it’ll be a matter of establishing a dominant defensive performance once again while continuing to find a rhythm on the offensive side of the ball.

It’ll be a true road trip for the Senators, who will spend just about 4.5 hours on the bus in each direction for Friday’s kickoff.

It seems unlikely that Carson will need a big spark, already accomplishing that in their home opener after dominating Canyon Springs.

There were plenty of playmakers to keep an eye on in the Senators’ opening game.

Defensively, Carson’s pursuit to the football has set the bar for the season.

Ean Thomas, who forced a fumble late in the second quarter, made a spectacular effort play to track down a receiver at the 4-yard line after he had broken free.

The hustle allowed the Senators’ defense to make a goal-line stand, stuffing four straight Pioneer run plays before taking over possession.

Johnathan Alvarado’s two interceptions — and one that he nearly returned for a touchdown — made him another player to watch on defense against the Spartans.

Offensively, Carson ran for 118 yards on the ground and passed for another 59, leaving some room for growth.

Head coach Ryan Boshard and company will surely want to see a bit more from the offensive unit after getting another week of practice.

Spring Creek had its own turnover issues in its first game against Galena — the Spartans threw four interceptions — giving the Senators a chance to once again feast on defense.

In total, Spring Creek was still able to put together 265 yards of offense, splitting it almost identically between the passing attack and rushing game.

Joseph Bright was the Spartans’ leading ball carrier with 78 yards on 19 carries.

Kickoff on Friday night at Spring Creek High School is scheduled for 7 p.m.
