Toy gun causes problem at Fallon elementary school

Churchill County School District received Wednesday morning a report a student had an object that looked like a gun when exiting a bus at Numa Elementary School.

The school and the Fallon Police Department determined the object was a toy and that there was no threat to student safety, Superintendent Derild Parsons said in a statement.

Parsons said weapons of any kind and toys that resemble weapons are prohibited on school property, including school buses. He said the school district will always take appropriate action if a student is found in possession of any weapon, whether it is real or a toy that resembles a weapon.

Toys that resemble weapons and are used as a weapon in any way, Parsons added, will be considered a weapon per District Policy 5136.0.

“I encourage you to share this information with your child and to talk with him/her about the importance of responsible and respectful behavior,” Parsons said. “Through cooperation and support, we can keep our schools safe and secure places to learn.”

Parsons extended his appreciation to the Fallon Police Department for their quick response to ensure the safety of the school district’s students and staff.

This latest report comes after a threat that was made Tuesday by a middle-school student. The Fallon Police Department took a student into custody for making threats against the school.
