Here we are in the final month of 2024 and as has been tradition for many a year, the annual Maine Street Christmas Tree Lighting is scheduled for the first Friday in December.
Santa’s Wonderland in the Fallon City Hall Courtyard will kick off the day’s events at 10 a.m. with cookie decorating, ornament crafting, letter writing, photo ops, ice skating and horse drawn carriage rides. These festivities run until noon. At 4:30 p.m., Fallon City Hall and The Douglass House will both be open with refreshments available and the tree will be lit at 6:30 p.m.
Immediately following the tree lighting we will have the Lahontan Valley Concert Choir on stage for a short round of beautiful carols followed by our two movies for the weekend which are sponsored by Sierra Financial — “Jack Frost” and “It’s a Wonderful Life.” What better way to follow up an unforgettable downtown Christmas event than with either of these enchanting classics?
Playing on both Friday and Saturday we have the 1979 stop motion animated adventure, “Jack Frost,” rated TV-G. The groundhog tells the story of how Jack Frost became human and helped a knight to win his lady love. This musical wintery tale has a runtime of 48 minutes.
Also playing on both Friday and Saturday, we have the heartwarming 1946 holiday family drama, “It’s a Wonderful Life,” starring James Stewart and Donna Reed at 7 p.m. An angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed.
And while this weekend will be nothing short of fantastic, we’re also gearing up for our very special Polar Express Weekend on Dec. 13-14. This free event is sponsored by Bassham Furniture and features three opportunities for a 4D experience with vibrations, scent, mist, confetti and more. As always, the complimentary hot cocoa bar will be available and every child will receive a small gift.
