The high school winter sports season opens this week for both Fallon and Oasis Academy.
Both schools’ basketball teams will compete in three-day tournaments on the road while Fallon hosts the annual Earl Wilkens Memorial Tournament, a two-day wrestling event at the Rafter 3C Arena.
A year removed from making the playoffs, both Fallon’s boys and girls basketball teams open the season Thursday.
The girls, who fell to Fernley in the semifinals of last season’s regional tournament, compete in Reno and Sparks. Fallon will take on 4A schools Reed, Carson and Manogue, the defending state champion, and 2A Yerington before traveling to Pyramid Lake next week to take on the two-time defending state champion. The Lakers upset defending 3A state champ Lowry to open the season last weekend.
Over the hill, the boys will compete in Rocklin for three days. Fallon nearly upset the 3A West’s top seed, Hug, in last season’s regional tournament quarterfinal to end the season. Fallon will host Pyramid Lake on Tuesday for its home opener.
Oasis Academy’s boys and girls basketball teams will compete in the Serpent Classic in Hawthorne, an hour south of Fallon.
Both teams fell short at making the playoffs last season but will face some of the top 1A competition this weekend. The Bighorns’ boys will face Coleville and Pyramid Lake on Thursday, Smith Valley and Excel Christian on Friday before closing out the tournament Saturday against Mineral County. The girls will play Smith Valley and Sierra Sage on Thursday, Coleville and Virginia City on Friday, and Mineral County on Saturday.
Both Oasis Academy teams open the home schedule on Tuesday when they host Silver Stage at the city-county gym.
One of the biggest early season wrestling tournaments comes to Fallon on Friday and Saturday. Fallon’s girls team will compete at Wooster on Saturday.
The two-day dual event features teams from the region and across all classes (1A, 2A, 3A and 5A) in the North. Fallon hosted its green/white dual on Wednesday to determine its varsity lineup.
The schedule is for CCHS and OACP sports Dec. 5-11. Home CCHS basketball games are played in the Elmo Dericco Gymnasium. Home Oasis Academy basketball games are played at the city-county gym.
