The Churchill County School Board recognized Churchill County High School students for their achievements Nov. 20.

The girls’ soccer team was recognized as the State Academic Team Champion for achieving a team grade point average of 3.79. Members of the girls’ golf team were recognized for earning a place on the 2024-25 NIAA Academic All-State team. The girls’ volleyball team was also recognized as the State Academic Team Champion for achieving a team grade point average of 3.84.

Future Farmers of America President Liam Few presented a summary of the group’s recent trip to the 27th National Convention in Indianapolis. The board acknowledged the 2024 National FFA Organization National Event — Prepared Public Speaker Bronze Emblem Individual Winner, Madison Gregory. Few also expressed the group’s appreciation for the funding support for the trip that was approved by the board at the last meeting.

Students from instructor Aaron Holt’s ESports program and video game design classes gave a Career and Technical Education presentation using projects they had created. The students demonstrated flight simulator “Aftershock,” an animated scuba diving game character and video game “Ruff Day.”

Trustee Kathryn Whitaker thanked them for coming and reminding the board of how the work they’re responsible for can make a difference in the lives of the students.

“Sometimes we get stuck talking about numbers and data and we forget why we’re here,” Whitaker said.

The board also conducted interviews with three potential candidates to fill the seat vacated by former trustee Matt Hyde. Candidates Keith Boone, Joseph Frey and Darren Hammer each completed a 20-minute interview, but all three of the nominations ended in a three-to-three vote stalemate.

Trustees decided to advertise again and collect additional candidate applications before the December meeting. The current applicants are also allowed to continue with their application, resubmit with additional information or withdraw. The next meeting is scheduled for Dec. 18 at 5:30 p.m. in the administrative office at 690 S. Maine St.
