Fallon basketball teams pick up tournament wins

Both the Fallon girls and boys basketball teams lost only one game in last weekend’s opening-season tournaments.

The girls finished the three-day Reno/Sparks tournament with a 3-1 record, including two wins over 4A schools and a narrow loss to the defending 4A state champions. The Greenwave boys finished the Rocklin tournament with a 2-1 record and took second in its division.

Fallon’s girls team, which finished third last season in the 3A East, defeated Reed, 47-41, and Yerington, 61-28, on Thursday before taking down Carson, 56-32, on Friday. The Wave finished the tournament with a 43-41 loss to Manogue on Saturday.

Fallon’s boys team, which finished fourth last season in the 3A East, defeated Sierra (Manteca, Calif.), 49-47, on Thursday and Bear River (Grass Valley, Calif.), 62-60, on Friday to advance to the championship game. Fallon fell to Livermore (Calif.), 71-55, on Saturday.

Senior Trevor Hyde and sophomore Calin Anderson were named to the all-tournament team.

Both Fallon basketball programs will open the home season against Hug on Friday. Games start at 3 p.m. with the lower-level teams followed by the varsity girls at 6 p.m. and varsity boys at 7:30 p.m. Fallon is at Sparks on Saturday.


OASIS ACADEMY

In Mineral County, the Oasis Academy boys and girls basketball teams finished 2-3 in last weekend’s Serpent Classic.

The boys team defeated Coleville, 58-14, on Thursday before falling to Pyramid Lake, 59-39. Oasis Academy lost a close battle to Smith Valley, 65-62, on Friday before defeating Excel Christian, 35-27. Oasis Academy lost to Mineral County, 69-41, on Saturday.

For the girls, they fell to Smith Valley, 35-14, on Thursday but came back to beat SSAROP. On Friday, Oasis Academy lost to Coleville, 38-20, and Virginia City, 54-17, but defeated Mineral County on Saturday for its second win.

The Bighorns travel to Lake Tahoe on Friday before hosting Sierra Lutheran next week.
