Letter: Christmas comes early

As we near the end of a long and contentious year, I want to share an incident that made my day. I was waiting in line at one of our local "discount" retailers to purchase a coffee table that I had carried to the register balanced on my head.

It wasn't that heavy, and I got some nice compliments on my "hat." After the lady ahead of me paid for her purchases, she turned and offered me the register coupon she had just received. I was puzzled a moment, then said, "Sure, why not. Thank you."

She smiled and left with her items. When I paid for my table, I discovered what I thought was a $10 coupon had just saved me $30! As I gratefully headed to the car, I heard a voice ask, "Did the coupon work?"

I said that it did and thanked her again, meaning to give her the whole story but before I could set the table down, she was gone. Such a simple sweet gesture... from one stranger to another. So, thank you, ma'am, whoever you are. Merry Christmas.
