Melendy second at Hamada; Fitzer wins girls tournament

A week after hosting the annual Earl Wilkens tournament, the Greenwave wrestling team was in three places at once.

The varsity boys competed at the Hamada Classic in Carlsbad, Calif., on Friday and Saturday while the girls team traveled to Reed for the Nevada Queens tournament, and the JV boys wrestled at McQueen on Saturday.

Fallon’s varsity team will travel to Colorado this weekend for the Warrior Classic while the JV wrestlers will compete in Lovelock. Fallon will compete in next week’s Sierra Nevada Classic in Reno.

Junior Carson Melendy finished second in the 157-pound division, winning his first four bouts to set up the championship in the Hamada Classic. Melendy recorded wins by tech fall and fall before scoring a 16-7 major decision and 4-2 decision over Rancho Bernardo’s Chris Villegas in the semifinal. Newport Harbor’s Anthony Manno won the championship by tech fall, 19-3.

Andre Green (138) finished the tournament 3-2, while Evan Garcia (132) was 2-2. Wrestlers who finished 1-2 included Braylon Byrd (106), Manuel Barros (113), Trey Bradley (120), Evan Mackuliak (126), Lonnie Adams (138), Neil McIntrye (144), Colton Blankenship (215)

Manuel Karaway (165), Wyatt Lambert (175) and Tyson Wilson (285) finished winless.

In Saturday’s Nevada Queens tournament, Tommie Fitzer won the 135 weight class, pinning all four opponents, including Reed’s Evelynn Hendrix in the finale. Melody Garcia-Bishop (100), Mckayla Taylor (125) and Zoe Rasmussen (155) each finished 0-2.

In the JV tournament in Reno, Rio Segura won the 138-pound class, including a 7-5 decision over Fernley’s Ivan Arias in the championship.

Matthew Bird (165) finished second and Nathan Anderson (132) and Lars Rasmussen (138) each took fourth. Collin Werle (113) went 0-2.
