No toll — Hill Beachey has generously thrown open his toll road between here and Hamilton to the traveling public, free of charge, for the winter. The road is a good one, or else it would not be the stage rout to White Pine. Heavy teamsters would do well to switch onto it. — Elko Independent

Prison boarders. H.C. Lawrence, W. Ryan’s and Chas Hoskins were brought over from Reno yesterday to serve time with Warden Considine at the state’s hotel down the road. The two former have 14 years and the latter 10 to serve.

Today was a big day for little Dennis Galvin. The 3 1/2-year-old traveled from Reno to Carson City today to meet Gov. Grant Sawyer. It was doubly a thrill for Galvin. He suffers from transverse myelitis. Galvin is the 1965 Easter Seals Child.

Scores of traffic accidents, including a head-on collision which killed a Carson City man, were the result of a weekend winter storm which dumped up to two feet of new snow in the Sierra Nevada by late Sunday and sent temperatures near zero this morning.

Further search for the bodies of Albert W. Woodcock, John Kensly and Frank Pierre, who were capsized in a boat on Lake Tahoe has been made, and will be continued for several days, unless successful. Tomorrow being the 10th day, it is thought the bodies may rise to the surface of the water.

Yesterday morning, a barn belonging to an Italian who lives on what is known as the old Cary ranch, just above Sheridan, was burned. His horses were in the stalls at the time and before he could get them out three were roasted alive and two so badly burned that they had to be shot.

The Goldfield News of Nov. 25 published the returns from the principal mines of that camp up to that date and the total approximate $3.658 million. This is a great record for a camp only a year old.

The value of Nevada’s mineral production declined in 1964, largely because of a month-long strike against Kennecott Copper Corp. Total mineral value dropped 3 percent to an estimate $82.8 million.

Joe “Dusty” Hill, a guitarist with the rock band ZZ Top, was in fair condition today after he was shot in the abdomen by a gun that fell from his boot and discharged accidentally. Hill was shot when his girlfriend was pulling off one of his boots and the .38 derringer fell out.

Dynamite at Belmont. About noon on Monday last people were startled by a loud explosion at the lower end of the town. Everybody rushed to the street and a general excitement prevailed for a short time. Further investigation showed that the explosion had occurred in a small cabin back of Giblin & Wilson’s saloon. The cabin was a wreck. — Courier

Distaff members of the state work force must work Christmas Eve just like every other day, Gov. Grant Sawyer has decided. Women working for the state had asked for a half day off to prepare for Christmas at home.

A Carson City Jail trusty who walked away from his job in a local restaurant Saturday was still at large this morning, a sheriff’s department spokesman said.
