Cold. It was snapping cold here yesterday. We had a talk with a Washoe County man yesterday and he told us that night before last was, he believed, the coldest he ever saw in that county; the lake (Washoe) is frozen over four to five inches thick.

Indian Dave, for the murder of a Chinese person in Nye County, has been sentenced to be hanged at Belmont on the 23rd of January next.

Before long the old scriptural camel will be used to carry provisions along the deserts to Tonopah. A company has been formed to capture the camels which abound near there and utilize them. They are the ones used years ago in Virginia City. The herd escaped and have multiplied, and many hundreds are now roaming the deserts of Nye and Esmeralda counties.

Tomorrow is the gala day that young and old in Carson City have been awaiting - the arrival of Santa Claus and a street parade that will usher in the Christmas season officially.

Turkey raffle. There will be a turkey raffle every night this week at the Ormsby House. Mr. Fryer has a large number of fat turkeys, just the right size and quality for Christmas dinners. It is probable, also that he will have some roasting pigs for the raffles to contend for.

A man in California who had been working on a ranch for 20 years had his wages paired in full a few days ago amounting to $10,000. There are several openings for that kind of man in Nevada.

The Carson News and Book Co. has received a few cases of delayed Christmas goods consisting mostly of toys and dolls which they are selling at prices just sufficient to cover cost and freight for cash only. Come early. They will not last long.

Winter romped into Nevada yesterday dressed in that March lion’s clothing — roaring wind, rain and almost springlike temperatures. Weather caused some power outages, and property damage and at least one injury and sparked speculation of flood threats.

Simulated ships afloat in the desert and supersonic dogfights with “enemy” jets in a kind of giant video game are envisioned by the Navy in its plans to upgrade its Nevada operations, plans that have produced consternation and anger among some residents of this rural area.

Mrs. Gussie Melville of Virginia City shipped to Carson yesterday six turkeys, one barrel of apples and a large box of candies as a present to the orphans at the State Asylum.

Christmas tree. At the Presbyterian Church at 7 o’clock, the exercises in connection with the Christmas tree will commence. Santa Claus has notified those in charge that he will be there on time. Anyone wishing to place presents on the tree can do so in the afternoon before 5 o’clock.

“Phew!” An editorial. Last Thursday, the Nevada Appeal carried the photo of a dead horse, killed when hit by a car on the River Road east of the city. Monday the dead horse was still lying beside the road. Last week we editorialized about the Grand Jury report that the county was six years behind on its road building, but we did not realize there wasn’t enough to pay for hauling away a dead horse.

More than 140 people were killed in traffic accidents in the first 24 hours of the long Christmas weekend as millions of people took to the highways. The National Safety Council estimates that between 370 and 470 people could die in traffic accidents during the holiday period.
