LA POSADA CELEBRATION

The second annual Latino Family Night La Posada Celebration was held Dec. 18 at the Oasis Cafeteria. The night was an opportunity for families to celebrate the holiday with fun, food, family and friends.

Oasis Academy ELL teachers Jose Ramirez and Page Hiskett headed the event with approximately 60 people attending.

The Posada celebration is a culturally rich event that honors the traditional Mexican custom of Las Posadas, which commemorates Mary and Joseph's search for shelter before the birth of Jesus. Typically held over nine nights from Dec. 16-24.

The Oasis celebration featured a feast of traditional Mexican dishes like tamales and hot chocolate, along with fun activities such as breaking piñatas filled with treats, games, ornament making, and raffles. This gathering not only fosters a sense of unity but also allows participants to engage deeply with their cultural heritage, making it a cherished annual highlight of the school year.

“This has turned into a really fun multicultural event for all of our families,” said Rochelle Tisdale, high school principal. “It helps us further understand each other and our cultures much better. Huge thank you to Page and Jose for all their hard work starting this annual tradition and coordinating it each year.”

MIDDLE SCHOOL FFA FILLS KARMA BOXES

Middle school FFA students from Oasis Academy were recently engaged in a meaningful community service initiative by filling Karma Boxes for the Churchill County Chamber of Commerce. This project is part of the community’s broader Karma Box Project, which aims to provide essential non-perishable food items and hygiene products to those in need within the community.

The involvement of FFA students in filling Karma Boxes highlights the importance of youth engagement in local charitable efforts. By participating in this project, students learn valuable lessons about empathy, responsibility, and the impact of giving back to their community.

Students walked donations to the chamber office Dec. 19.

The Karma Box Project itself plays a crucial role in addressing food insecurity and providing essential resources to vulnerable populations. To learn more about how you can help with Fallon’s Karma Box project, contact Lucy Carnahan at lcarnahan@fallonchamber.com.

STUDENTS CAROL THROUGH TOWN

The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear. Tradition was kept alive through song with two nights of Oasis students caroling throughout Fallon.

FFA students started the week off on Dec. 9 with caroling and the eighth-grade class continued it on the following day.

Students were driven on an Action Crane and Trucking truck and flatbed with Oasis Alumnus Eddie Morrow driving.

After both groups were done caroling, they returned to school for fun holiday activities, including hot chocolate, games, and gift exchanges.
