The Greenwave wrestling team finished in the top half at the Warrior Classic last weekend in Grand Junction, Colo., where teams from across the region competed.
Fallon finished 24th out of 50 teams with 51.5 points. Uintah dominated the event with 304.5 points, while Fruita Monument and Falcon rounded out the top three.
Leading the Greenwave was Carson Melendy, who finished second in the 157-pound division.
After starting with a dominant tech fall victory in the preliminaries, Melendy proceeded to win four consecutive matches, including falls over Jace Woolery of Palisade and Lincoln Gentry of Columbine, as well as a 17-10 win over Cole Pontine of Durango. In the semifinals, he scored an 18-8 major-decision win over Wylee Lorimor of Cedaredge. However, in the championship match, Melendy lost by tech fall (17-1) to Hassin Maynes from Central of Grand Junction.
Braylon Byrd (106) faced a tough start with a loss by fall to Travis Angus of Uintah in the championship round, but he bounced back in the consolation rounds, pinning Demarcus Duggan of Pueblo Centennial and later earning an 18-9 major decision over Kyersau Wall of Grand Junction. He fell to Blake Saddler from Eaglecrest, but Byrd earned his team five points.
Manuel Barros (113), after dropping an 8-4 match in the first round to Teagun Samora of Montezuma Cortez, was defeated by Hunter Mars of Bayfield in the next round. Also in the same weight class, Evan Mackuliak finished 1-2 after pinning Montezuma Cortez’s Bodie Stiegelmeyer in the consolation’s first round before falling in the next bout.
Andre Green (132) secured a win by fall over Stetson Osborn of Pagosa Springs in his first match. However, he lost by a 15-6 major decision to Jimmy Hamoodi of Denver East in the second round and later suffered a technical fall (17-0) loss to Blaze Unpingco from Canon City in the consolation bracket.
Lonnie Adams (138) opened the tournament with a tech fall win and a fall victory, but he was pinned by Tyler Varra of Highland in the quarterfinals and later lost a 14-10 decision to Treyven Stevens of North Fork. Adams earned his team 7.5 points.
Manuel Karaway (165) fell in his first match but rebounded by pinning Central of Grand Junction’s Paul Broussard. Karaway, though, fell in his next bout. Colton Blankenship (190) also won one bout, a 17-0 tech fall over Silver Creek’s Carter Blair before falling in his final match.
Neal McIntyre (144) and Jason Lewis (215) went winless in two bouts.
LOVELOCK RESULTS
The 2024 Lovelock Mustangs Tournament showcased fierce competition as Churchill County's wrestlers battled through multiple rounds with determination, though the team faced challenges across several weight classes.
While the varsity team competed in Colorado, the rest of the wrestling program faced regional competition in the Lovelock Mustangs Tournament, finishing eighth with 84.5 points.
Spanish Springs claimed the top spot with 206.5 points, narrowly edging out Lowry Blue (205.0) and McQueen (181.5).
In the varsity division, Trey Bradley (120 pounds) earned 5.5 points, bouncing back from an initial loss with a win by tech fall and fall in the consolation rounds, but fell to Levi Heater of McQueen. Evan Garcia (132) had a solid run with a series of falls in the consolation bracket, but fell short in the consolation semifinal to Lowry Blue’s Bradyn Snyder.
Tejae Edie (144) picked up a victory by fall in the consolation’s second round, but he lost by tech fall (15-0) to Carlos Lujan of Bishop Manogue. Wyatt Lambert (157) earned 7 points with a couple of fall victories but lost, 17-14, to Reno’s David Fong. Tyson Wilson (285) won by fall, but was pinned in his final match, leaving him with four points.
Collin Werle (113) and Rio Segura (138) went 0-2.
In the girls’ division, Tommie Fitzer (140) took second after a pin over Spanish Springs’ Alice Graham in the semifinals. Fitzer, though, lost in the finals by fall to Coral Academy’s Shyann Martinez. Zoe Rasmussen (165) finished fourth with her lone win coming by injury default over Fernley’s Peyton Benson.
Mckayla Taylor (125) fell to Jenessa Echeveria Silva (North Valleys) but managed a major decision victory over Tessa Drescher (Incline) in the consolation round before losing to Mia Eagan (Spanish Springs). Melody Garcia-Bishop (105) lost both of her matches.
In the JV division, Nathan Anderson (132) and Matthew Bird (165) won their weight class. Anderson won his first two matches by fall before a 22-10 major-decision win over Fernley’s Brayden Cruz to win the division. Bird pinned his first opponent and then scored a major decision before winning the bracket by forfeit in the final round.
Lars Rasmussen (138) finished third after rebounding from a semifinal loss to decision Portola’s Oscar Rochae, 14-8, in the medal match. Tayven Martinez (144) won his first by major decision before dropping the next two.
