Residents of Skyline Estates Senior Living and Memory Care received some holiday cheer Friday from Girl Scout Troop 252 who came to visit them and provide a few gifts.
Since November, the Girl Scouts had been holding a personal item drive collecting donations from partners and businesses in the area. Members sought toiletries, comfort items and activities including coloring books and markers to brighten the spirits of the assisted living facility seniors, troop leader Rachel Maiello said. The Scouts “set up shop” and allowed the residents to select the items at will.
Sophia Guzman, a seventh grader from Carson Middle School, said she enjoyed providing an act of kindness.
“Today we are kind of giving to people who may not have families with them anymore, kind of stuff they might need during Christmas … just toothbrushes and toothpaste … and spending time with other people,” she said.
Eagle Valley Middle School seventh grader Maya Creelman enjoyed making her community proud through service.
“It feels really good, and it just brings me joy and just gives me a smile on my face and it’s really fun,” Creelman said.
Troop leader Rachel Maiello said the drive produced a great community turnout with donation boxes placed at Western Nevada College’s Child Development Center and Carson Middle School, and other partners including the Starbucks Topsy Lane store, First United Methodist Church and the Nevada Department of Indigent Defense Services assisting.
“We had so many donations, so that’s awesome,” Maiello said.
The troop is part of the Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada, which promotes social and life skills for young students.
