Churchill County High School senior James Sorensen scoops artisan-style handmade ice cream every day as an intern at Country Creamery inside The Grid Market and Brewery.
Sorensen initially chose to work there because owners Kyle and Carly Sipherd are part of his extended family, and he wanted to help with something he thought was a great idea. Also, he wanted to work alongside several of his closest friends who had already been hired.
“I have found there is no greater feeling in the world than seeing a kid’s eyes light up as you hand them a scoop of heaven and see the smile form on their messy face as they enjoy their ice cream,” Sorensen said.
After graduation from CCHS, Sorensen said he will complete a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and then attend university. He plans to study business and also pursue his childhood dream to study, compose and perform his own original music.
He said that his biggest surprise in the job has been realizing how many people he hadn’t met in Fallon. He has enjoyed getting to know the people in his hometown better and, as a result, also finding more ways to serve the community.
Sorensen said he would encourage other students to “go all in” on trying new things because “you never know where something will take you.”
“Always seek opportunities to help and serve those around you, it will bless your life,” Sorensen said. “How you bear your responsibilities reflects on who you are, so work hard, be disciplined, give a lot, but never give up. And, most importantly, have fun!”
