A celebration of the Lunar (Chinese) New Year is scheduled for Feb. 9-10 at the Nevada State Museum and Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada in Carson City.
“The Lunar New Year celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada highlights Chinese culture and its importance to Nevada history,” said a press release from the Nevada State Museum. “Come celebrate with dance and performances for the Year of the Dragon in downtown Carson City.”
Visitors and locals of all ages are invited to watch traditional and contemporary dance and performance art. The Nevada State Museum and the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada are partnering to host the Carson Valley Chinese Cultural Group for their sixth year performing for Chinese New Year, three of those collaboratively between museums, according to museum officials.
“This year the event is expanding,” the release said. “The Reno Chinese Dance Club will be performing at the state museum, and Mongolian-American silhouette fine artist STuro will be performing at the children’s museum. The program is supported by Visit Carson City and support from local partners.”
The Feb. 9 program will be at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St., at 6:30 p.m. The Feb. 10 program will start at the Nevada State Museum at 9:30 a.m., and then the Lion Dance Parade will take the program to the Children’s Museum of Northern Nevada at 813 N. Carson St. Family activities and performances will last through the afternoon of Feb. 10.
Museum officials said the two-day event acknowledges the “significant chapter the Chinese have played in the history and culture of the Silver State.”
“The Lunar New Year is a perfect time to reflect on the importance of Chinese and Chinese-Americans who have contributed to and continue to contribute to our great state,” said Nevada State Museum Director Josh Bonde.
