On Friday, Carson High School students enjoyed the privilege of duct taping several of their administrators and teachers to the walls in Senator Square in an effort to raise money for the Special Olympics, the charity designated by Winterfest.

Principal Dan Carstens, Vice Principal Sue Moulden and Math Department Chair and teacher Shanell Cavener were taped to walls by students who donated $1 each to provide a strip of tape, Carstens said.

“You sort of have a captive audience, don’t you?” Carstens joked when approached by the Appeal for a comment. “I would be taped any time we can do something like this (for charity). … There’s been quite a bit of money coming in, and we’re happy about that.”

Senior Dylan Cooley, a Winterfest candidate, gave to tape his teacher Cavener to the wall but also pitched in to make sure Carstens stayed stuck.

“It’s really fun seeing how many people donate to something meaningful to someone else,” Cooley said.

Winterfest, an annual celebration that began Jan. 29, lasted throughout the week and featured dress-up days, movie nights, games, a talent night and other activities.

On Saturday, during the Winterfest Dance in Senator Square, Carson High School named AJ Marhevka and Brooklyn Grundy as the 2024 Winterfest King and Queen.

Kekoa Mitchell and Addy Morgan were named the 2024 Junior Class Winterfest Prince and Princess, Alex Martinez and Norah Schultz were named the 2024 Sophomore Class Winterfest Prince and Princess and Cruz Gonzales and Maria Pimentel Avelar were named the 2024 Freshman Class Winterfest Prince and Princess. The underclassmen crowning events were held at 6 p.m. Friday at the Galaxy Movie Theater.
