Big Matt, the Russian who got butted off into the Carson River the other day by a locomotive engine is at Empire. Yesterday his injuries were inspected by doctors Webber and Allen who discovered a fracture. Matt will recover.

Clem Berry’s case was called yesterday in the district court. Berry having no attorney, H.F. Bartine was appointed by the court. Seven jurors were obtained, and the venire being exhausted, a new one was ordered.

Persons who believe that Carson is a thing of beauty should take a look about the entire city at the present time. Since it was decided to enforce the law regulating tree spraying, a number of Carsonites have gone mad. There is not a section in this city but that someone’s poor judgement is not destroying trees that have taken a lifetime to grow. The application of 25 cents of spray will comply with the law.

The board of examiners of the State Bar Association introduced into the supreme court today evidence to support their denial of bar standing to Negro attorney Charles L. Kellar “on the ground of failure to meet character standards for admission to the bar.”

Twenty persons were listed this week in the drunken driving report by the Carson City Justice Court that either were convicted or pleaded guilty.

The proposition to tax themselves in a sufficient sum to enable the trustees to build the needed addition to the Carson District School is presented to the property owners of this district. There is no escaping the fact that the additional room is an imperative necessity.

A number of chess players met in the Secretary of State’s office on Sunday, and after some discussion organized a chess club with the following officers: Hon. O.R. Leonard, president; Wells Drury, vice president; and George Tuffy, treasurer. It is proposed to secure a suitable room and have a chess tournament. The club is ready to receive challenges and play games with any other club on the coast.

Gov. Grant Sawyer said today he had received no complaints on federal wiretapping in Nevada since a Dec. 3 talk with President Lyndon B. Johnson on the matter.

Divorce is always painful, but a 1983 law is making it less expensive and easier for many couples. About 20 percent of the divorces filed in the Carson City Clerk’s office since Jan. 1 used the new simplified method which doesn’t even require either of the partners to show up in court.

Of a shooting scrape which took place at Gold Hill on Sunday morning two young men named Thomas Coleman and Charles Cullnan had an altercation while taking a social drink in the Union Saloon, Gold Hill. The bartender parted the belligerents and held Coleman a few minutes to give Cullnan a chance to get out of the way. Cullnan ran around the depot, but Coleman headed him off and started shooting. The Grand Jury will be sought to charge him with attempted murder.

Snow has fallen to such a depth on the C&C as to impede all railroad travel. The train leaving the Mound House last Saturday got snow-bound near the state line and is not yet able to proceed. Yesterday men went out on snowshoes over the road, and it is said the entire route between Candelaria and Bishop Creek has been searched with no traces of the train. In some places the snow is 40 feet deep.

For the past week the celebration of the China New Year has been going full blast in this city. During that time the citizens of town have taken advantage of the foreign hospitality and have invaded the quarters. The ladies have formed parties and the gentlemen have done likewise with the boys enjoying firing crackers with as much vim as the Fourth of July.

A Nevada prisoner who escaped from the prison honor camp west of Carson City Sunday was arrested Wednesday night after a car wreck.
