A Dayton 8-year-old attacked by the family dog Thursday is expected to live, according to a Lyon County Sheriff’s Office news release.
The dog was euthanized, the release said.
Thursday at 3:56 p.m., LCSO, Central Lyon County Fire Department and Lyon County Animal Control were dispatched to the 200 block of Riverboat Road in Dayton for a reported dog bite.
Upon arrival, they discovered the 8-year-old had sustained significant injuries from the family’s dog, an approximately 50-pound Shar Pei. The juvenile was treated by medics then flown by helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno.
The juvenile, who was not identified in the release, is expected to live but the extent of the injuries is unknown.
Despite efforts, animal control determined they were unable to safely secure the dog due to its aggressiveness, the release said. Animal control and the dog’s owner requested the dog be euthanized and LCSO personnel euthanized the dog on scene. The dog will undergo testing to try to identify if it suffered from infectious disease. It is not known what caused the dog to become vicious.
The incident as a whole, including the dog’s owners, are under investigation to determine if criminal conduct occurred, the release said.
