Churchill County commissioners approved $3,000 in community support at their Feb. 21 meeting for the Lahontan Valley Claybreakers youth team-based target shooting club.

Pat and Wayne Whitten said they have been co-leading the club for 18 years. Pat Whitten told commissioners trap shooting is currently one of the fastest growing youth sports in the nation. The biggest funding obstacle is the purchase of ammunition for practice sessions at the shooting range. The cost of a pallet, or 112 cases of ammunition, has increased to $10,000 over the past two years.

Although she writes multiple grants each year, Whitten said they appreciate the county’s support of the program.

“It really helps us,” she said.

Commissioners also approved to receive a $5,000 donation from the Fallon Rotary Club toward the $18,789 total cost to purchase and install a shade structure at the Cottage Schools play area. FRC will also volunteer some labor hours and the county will supply the remaining funds and labor for the project. The shade will be used by students attending the Churchill Aquatic Recreation Education, or C.A.R.E., after-school program.

Commissioners also took action on the following:

• Received an update of current activities and plans related to the Bureau of Land Management's Carson City District.

• Approved $16,125 for a service agreement with Cashman Equipment for maintenance of county-owned and operated generators.

• Approved the publishing of a legal notice for the final public comments regarding locating the secondary water treatment plant in the 100-year floodplain.

• Approved a $595,260 bid from Miles Construction for the Churchill County Public Defender's Office Tenant Improvement Project.

• Adopted policy and procedure revisions for the Jim Regan Memorial Scholarships.

• Approved a lease amendment with the Nevada System of Higher Education on behalf of Western Nevada College to accommodate a Health Resources Services and Administration Grant.

• Approved to relieve Schroeder Law Offices as counsel for United States v. TCID, Case No. 3:95-CV000757.
