The Tiger boys basketball team jumped all over Spanish Springs Saturday, posting a 21-5 lead after the first quarter.

However early in the fourth quarter, the Cougars had whittled away at the lead, cutting the game to 49-45.

Douglas went on to win 62-53 to move to 3-3 in Class 4A North league play.

Up four in the fourth quarter, Jett Lehmann drove to the rim for a bucket to push Douglas’ lead back to six before Trace Estes added a layup to make it, 53-45.

Lehmann, who finished the game with 19 points, hit a pair of free throws on the Tigers’ next possession to push Douglas’ lead back to double digits.

Caden Thacker led the Tigers with 20 points on 8-of-11 shooting from the field.

Spanish Springs was aided by Douglas foul trouble, which allowed the Cougars to shoot 24 free throws in the second half.

“We’ve had quarter, quarter-and-a-half lulls the last five or six games,” said head coach Corey Thacker. “Today was the first day we’ve had that (foul trouble). It was us just being lazy. … We’re a better team than that.”

On Thursday, the Tigers dropped a 63-40 decision at Galena after getting off to a slow start.

The Grizzlies, behind some timely shooting, jumped out to a 21-7 lead after the first quarter. Douglas chipped away, eventually closing the margin to eight points in the fourth before Galena was able to work the clock down.

Caden Thacker’s 13 points led the Tigers, who also got nine from Ishmi Enos. Kyle Koontz had seven rebounds.

UP NEXT: Douglas (4-12, 3-3) will head North to Carson (4-11, 0-6) Friday evening.
