The Oasis Academy boys basketball team split its four games in last month’s Sierra Nevada Basketball Christmas Classic before falling in a close contest against Yerington last week.

The Bighorns (5-8, 1-4 2A North) fell to Yerington, 61-53, on Friday at the city-county gym. Their game against North Tahoe on Saturday was postponed due to the winter storm.

Oasis Academy traveled to Pershing County on Tuesday before hosting Coral Academy on Wednesday. The Bighorns host Sierra Lutheran on Saturday.

“Critical turnovers late in the game along with defensive breakdowns during baseline out of bounds stopped our ability to overcome the 10-point first half lead the Lyons had,” Oasis Academy coach Don Schank said. “On the bright side, we shot 40 percent from the field, which is a season high for us.”

Schank also said that the team recorded their highest in steals with 13, blocks with five and deflections with 17.

Fenn Mackedon led the team against Yerington with 23 points, six rebounds, four blocks and six steals. Hunter Adams scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds, while Matthew Bird and Austin Booker each had seven points. Bird led the team in assists with three, Booker had a team-high seven rebounds. Trevor Barrenchea scored six points.

In the holiday tournament, Oasis Academy defeated Carson’s JV team, 39-33, and Reed’s JV team, 43-42. The Bighorns lost to Douglas’ JV team, 54-21, and McQueen’s JV team, 60-43.

“It was a great opportunity to play against larger schools' JV programs,” Schank said. “We had to struggle with sickness that has plagued the team. We only had seven players the first game but ended up with 11 by the last game.”

Against Carson, Bird led the team with 17 points and Mackedon had 10 and 17 rebounds for the double-double. In the Douglas loss, Mackedon led with 10 points and nine rebounds, and Bird had seven points. Against Reed, Mackedon had another double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds while Bird had 14 points and nine rebounds. Booker scored 10 points. Mackedon led the team against McQueen with 19 points and seven rebounds. Bird had nine points and five rebounds, while Eli Jones and Kayden White each scored six points.

“Playing four games over the Christmas break was great for us,” Schank added. “These games gave us additional experience playing bigger, stronger and athletic teams that we need in preparation for our league play the rest of the season.”

Before the tournament, Oasis Academy defeated Silver Stage, 53-24, but lost to Incline, 66-25, with both games on the road.

In the Silver Stage win, Bird led the team with 14 points and Mackedon had 11 as nine players scored. The team shot 41 percent from the floor.

Against the No. 1 team, Incline, Mackedon had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Barrenchea score seven points.
