After a humbling loss to Pershing County on the road, the Oasis Academy boys basketball team bounced back into the win column to snap a three-losing streak.
The Bighorns defeated Sierra Lutheran, 45-20, on Saturday at the city-county gym after falling to Pershing County, 67-46, on Jan. 9.
“This game was the complete opposite of how we came out to play versus Lovelock,” Oasis Academy coach Don Schank said. “We had more defensive intensity, more control with our offensive play and kept that momentum going through the entire game.”
Schank saw a reduction in turnovers with the team totaling 14 in the game, but with only four coming in the second half as the Bighorns notched their second 2A league win of the season to improve to 2-5.
Fenn Mackedon led the team with 14 points and Matthew Bird added 12, coming one rebound (nine) shy of a double-double. Austin Booker scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds and had a team-high five steals. Trevor Barrenchea scored six points and Kayden White added four.
In the loss to Pershing County, Schank said turnovers cost the team, which also missed layup opportunities. The Mustangs also converted nine 3-pointers, had 17 second-shot attempts and scored 10 points from turnovers.
Mackedon led the team with 24 points and eight rebounds while Booker had 10 points and six rebounds. Bird scored six points and had four rebounds, and Barrenchea added four points and three rebounds.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
The Oasis Academy girls basketball team fell to Pershing County, 49-13, and Sierra Lutheran, 44-36.
Grace Laca led the team with 10 points and had six rebounds against Pershing County, and Kaylee Craig added three points and three rebounds. Hazel Mackedon had a team-high seven rebounds, and Caitlin Oyler and Kiera McCoy each had four. Craig also had four steals.
