National Intern Day is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the future leaders of the world and is celebrated on the last Thursday in July.

Internships are one way a business owner can encourage the next generation to consider their trade specialty as a career.

Sue Segura, the work-based learning coordinator for Churchill County School District, works to build business partnerships with the community through creating internship opportunities. In April, Segura secured a $487,000 grant, enough to continue the work-based learning program for three years. The funding allows her to meet with every senior at Churchill County High School to help them build a plan for their future.

“Without a plan, a goal is just a dream,” Segura said.

After students take the Nevada Career Explorer interest assessment, Segura discusses career options and facilitates college and trade school visits. She helps with resume and interview skills and sets high expectations with the students to take their job responsibilities seriously.

Segura said two of her students, seniors Brody Hughes and James Kelsey, are interns at CC Communications. Kelsey works in the shop with the maintenance and grounds specialist learning all aspects to becoming a hands-on industrial employee.

Hughes is currently using what he learned in his high school cybersecurity class in the information technology department. He’s also in the process of finishing the requirements to earn an industry-recognized IT certification.

“That's what work based learning truly is, transferring skills from school to work,” Segura said.
