Construction crews recently uncovered an artistic mosaic rendering of the Great Seal of the State of Nevada at Carson City School District’s Student Support Services building at 710 W. Fourth St. on the Bordewich Bray Elementary School campus in Carson City.

The artistic piece is estimated to have been created in the late 1970s or early ’80s by special education teacher Bob Mateas and students. It is composed of glass and mirror shards, rocks and paint and is thought to have been covered for safety purposes.

The construction project unveiling the piece was part of the district’s efforts to accommodate the joint use agreement with the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada’s new Smart Start day care services scheduled to open this fall, before the Aug. 19 school start date, at the district’s Student Support Services building.

Decisions are still being made on how to maintain and retain the artistic piece. Anyone with additional information is welcome to contact the district office.
