Our handsome young soldier friend, Lew Meder, came home yesterday morning. He has been promoted from first sergeant to a second lieutenancy since was here last. Looks fine.

Capt. Lapham is about to build a new pleasure board for the lake. It is to be sort of a sloop, 100 feet long by 30 feet wide and fitted up for rooms for families. In short it will be sort of a floating hotel and tie up the bank at night when whenever it happens to want to. The cost will be about $5,000 and will be ready in a month.

The Carson River is booming again. Any warm day sets the waters to surging. A touch of frost in the mountains shuts off the extra flooding and saves the supply. The back water is so high at the Vivian as to oblige Superintendent Brown to shut down temporarily.

The Salvation Army. A detatchment enters Reno and commences a bombardment. The advance guard of the Holiness Band, comprised of two women and three men, arrived in Reno Thursday, and gave a street concert to a large and cosmopolitan audience in the evening. — Gazette

For some years past there has been an accumulation of back taxes due the state from the various counties until now the amount reaches over $15,000. All calls to settle up from the State Board of Revenue have been ignored, and finally the board sent deputy controller Doane out to investigate the books. He has made a report, and all indications are somewhat peculiar state of affairs exists in several quarters. In some places the books were in such a condition as to make any attempt to straighten them a waste of time.

Members of the Carson City Order of Eagles will present a Flag Day ceremony again this year. The group will perform the service on June 12, actually two days before Flag Day, in conjunction with boy’s state.

There was quite a number of old Democratic war horses on the street yesterday, all dressed up in their good clothes, and wearing an anxious look upon their faces: also, several old time Bourbon bulldozers from the Comstock and American Flat. An investigation of the matter showed that a Democratic primary was in progress, and the clans were mustering for the fray.

Six masked men heavily armed, last Saturday night threw open the door of the engine room at the Combination mine at Goldfield and shot engineer Robert Dempsey without a word of warning. The trouble is believed to have been caused by the fact that Dempsey refused to join the union. — Tonopah Sun.

More than 150 top high school students convened at Stewart Indian School near Carson City today for the 18th annual Nevada Boy’s State. The conference in citizenship and government operation continues through next Sunday.
