Talia Tretton was named Nevada’s softball Gatorade Player of the Year Friday morning.
The outgoing senior earns the prestigious honors for the second year in a row, marking the first time that’s happened in the sport since 2007-08.
This spring the University of Iowa signee befuddled opposing hitters with 373 strikeouts in 216.2 innings of work. Her punchout total was the sixth most in the country.
The right-handed pitcher led the nation with 32 wins, per MaxPreps.
Her bat has been a major contributor to the Douglas offense over the years, posting a .459 batting average this season alongside an .807 slugging percentage with 14 doubles, eight home runs and 45 RBIs.
Tretton and the Tigers won three straight Class 5A North regional titles and have played for the state title in each of the last three seasons.
The program won a state title in 2023, its first since 1992 and third total.
Each year the Gatorade Player of the Year is awarded to the nation’s top high school athletes for excellence on the field, in the classroom and in the community.
Tretton has volunteered locally with Douglas High’s Block D, an athletics-sponsored club that provides Thanksgiving dinners to those in need. She has also donated her time as a youth softball coach. “Talia is an absolute game-changer, both in the circle and at the plate,” said Brian La Torre, head coach of Reno High School. “She has the ability to throw multiple pitches at a very high level, and offensively, she can hit and hit for power. Talia’s name appears throughout the boxscore with impressive numbers in several categories.”
Tretton has maintained a weighted 4.06 GPA in the classroom.
