The Carson City Sheriff’s Office has received multiple reports and cases from citizens scammed during fraudulent business transactions, according to a news release.
CCSO is taking the opportunity to remind the public of ways to protect against fraudulent business transactions and scams:
• Use your network of friends, family, and online review platforms to vet contractors and other persons performing service on your home, business, vehicle, or other property
• Utilize only bonded, licensed, and insured contractors and service providers. Check the credentials of door-to-door salespersons
• Avoid contractors who request payment in full before the completion of any services. Reputable service providers typically require down payments equal to 1/3 of the total cost of the service
• Get detailed and written contracts or quotes before rendering any payment or scheduling any services
• Contact the Better Business Bureau or the Carson City Chamber of Commerce to inquire about businesses operating in our area
“Most victims are scammed during their first encounter with a fraudster who uses high-pressure sales tactics or offers goods or services that are ‘too good to be true,’” CCSO said. “Most scam victims reported ‘having a feeling’ they were being scammed before rendering payment. Once payment is rendered for a poorly performed or incomplete service, it typically must be resolved through civil litigation.
“If you have a feeling something is wrong with the transaction, stop. Trust your instincts and contact the sheriff’s office if you suspect you are the victim of a scam.”
