A Fallon optometrist has recently been named as the Nevada Optometry Association’s state optometrist of the year at the annual dinner in Las Vegas.

Dr. Greg Koenig, a longtime resident of Churchill County, received the award March 9 at the group’s awards ceremony. Koenig, an optometrist with Robertson and Koenig Optometry and a first-term Nevada Assemblyman for District 38, said he’s honored to receive the award. Koenig, though, was unable to attend because of a family matter.

“Receiving the optometrist of the year award is an honor,” Koenig said. “It is a reflection of the unwavering support I have received from my colleagues, mentors and the community at large. I am deeply grateful for their guidance and encouragement every step of the way.”

Koenig and Robertson have owned their business since the mid-1990s.

Koenig was first elected to the District 38 seat in 2022, and he is running unopposed this year. He previously served on the Churchill County Board of Commissioners for one term and the Churchill County School Board for three terms.

“My aim has always been to advocate for policies that enhance educational opportunities and promote the welfare of our community,” Koenig said.

Koenig’s legislative duties have allowed him to champion initiatives that prioritize eye care accessibility and affordability. He said the passage of Senate Bill 134 is a testament to the Legislature’s collective efforts to empower optometrists in the state to provide more affordable and convenient eye care services to their fellow citizens.

“My journey began with a passion for education, culminating in my studies at the University of Nevada, Reno, and Pacific University College of Optometry,” Koenig said. “These formative years laid the groundwork for a lifetime dedicated to the pursuit of knowledge and service.”

Koenig also touted his learning on the school board and county commission as beneficial for conducting business as an assemblyman. That, according to Koenig, has allowed him to see bills materializing from the first stage to passage.

Koenig said he accepts this award with profound gratitude and a renewed commitment to continue serving the profession and the public with dedication, integrity and compassion.

“Together, let us strive to make a positive impact on the lives of those we serve,” he said.
