Both the Oasis Academy baseball and softball teams swept Battle Mountain on the road last weekend to stay second in the Northern 2A.
The baseball team improved to 8-1 and trails West Wendover for the league lead, while the softball team stayed undefeated (10-0) and trails Pershing County for first.
Both teams host Silver Stage on Friday and travel to Yerington next week.
The Bighorns’ baseball team won the series opener on Friday, 10-0, before taking the doubleheader on Saturday, 18-2 and 6-5.
In the baseball team’s first game, the Bighorns scored in all but the fourth inning of the shortened game.
Juniors Zachary Budner and Fenn Mackedon each hit a home run as Budner led the team in RBIs with three to go along with a single. Sophomore Kayden White hit safely in all four at-bats, senior Benjamin Utz drove in two runs and sophomore Ryder McNabb had an RBI.
McNabb and sophomore Matthew Bird combined for the shutout with McNabb getting the win after striking out six in three innings. Bird struck out three in two innings.
The bats stayed hot in the first game on Saturday as the Bighorns broke a 2-2 tie with a nine-run third inning before ending the game in the fifth due to the mercy rule.
Utz led the team at the plate with three hits and five RBIs, Bird and McNabb each drove in three and White had three hits and an RBI. Budner and sophomore Trevor Barrenchea each drove in two.
Budner picked up the win in relief, striking out seven in 3.1 no-hit innings, after Mackedon started, going 1.2 innings and striking out five and allowing a hit and an earned run.
In the nightcap, Oasis Academy came back from a 4-1 hole with four runs in the fifth and another run in the seventh to hold off the Lander County school.
Mackedon and Bird each had three hits, including a double, and White and sophomore James Thibodaux each had two hits. Budner drove in two runs, and Mackedon and Thibodaux each had an RBI.
Bird picked up the win in relief, striking out five in three innings and allowing three hits and one earned run. White started in the no-decision, giving up six hits and four earned runs in four innings while striking out eight.
SOFTBALL
The Lady Bighorns remained undefeated after beating the Longhorns, 6-2, on Friday and 10-2 and 8-6 on Saturday.
In the final game to clinch the sweep, Oasis Academy jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed despite Battle Mountain scoring the game’s final three runs.
Freshman Phynex Hunt led the team with four RBIs off a pair of triples and a single, and freshman Emma Lewis doubled and singled to go with an RBI. Junior Kirsten Detamosi also drove in one.
Individual statistics were not available for the first two games.
