Carson High School students were released after being placed in lockdown Friday as Carson City Sheriff’s officers investigated the school for a reported threat of a weapon sighting that ultimately turned out to be unfounded.
The lockdown went into effect at 12:15 p.m. It was lifted approximately an hour later.
Carson City School District administrators sent out a notification to families and cautioned parents not to approach the school, but some gathered at the entrance by about 12:30 p.m.
CCSO investigators examined camera footage to find the classroom and suspected student, Sheriff's Sgt. Dan Gomes said. A student had reported a sighting of a peer pulling out a black visor that appeared to be a gun and reported it right away, he said.
Gomes praised the student for taking the correct action in making the report.
“The student did a good job by seeing something, saying something, and reporting it right away,” Gomes said.
At approximately 1:15 p.m., Sheriff Ken Furlong exited the school with Gomes and informed parents the school was clear, no credible threat was found, and regular release and pickup would commence.
Gomes said the investigation was precautionary and said normal pickup procedures for students were in place after the lockdown.
Furlong told The Appeal that students “were all calm” as officers narrowed their investigation to specific classrooms, noting their cooperation.
