A 31-year-old man from Mount Shasta, Calif., has been identified as the person who died from a truck crash on I-80 in Fernley on April 16.
According to a news release from the Nevada State Police, Joshua Fitzgerald was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries following the crash and succumbed to his injuries on April 24.
Nevada Highway Patrol responded to the crash at approximately 5:18 a.m. on April 16. The crash occurred near mile marker 53 on eastbound I-80. Fitzgerald was driving a 2013 Dodge Ram when he lost control of the vehicle, preliminary investigation showed.
“The driver of the Dodge Ram steered to the right causing the Dodge to travel from the number one travel lane through the number two travel lane,” the release said. “The Dodge overturned multiple times and came to rest on its roof between the two travel lanes.”
Investigators said a 2024 Freightliner towing an enclosed trailer was in the other travel lane and attempted to avoid the overturned Dodge by braking and steering left.
“The front right of the Freightliner struck the side of the Dodge,” the release said. “The Dodge rotated clockwise and came to rest on its roof facing southbound in the right shoulder dirt area. The Freightliner came to rest in the far left (number one) travel lane.”
Nevada State Police Highway Patrol Northern Command West M.I.R.T (Multidisciplinary Investigation & Reconstruction Team) is investigating the crash. So far this year, the Nevada Highway Patrol Northern Command West has investigated 8 fatal crashes resulting in 10 fatalities.
