The Churchill County High School class of 2024 collectively received more than $1.4 million in scholarships amid cheers, applause, handshakes and hugs at the May 7 awards night.
That total does not include awarded Millennium Scholarships or Nevada Promise.
Members of the community, the Churchill County School District Board of Trustees and several college alumnus handed out awards during the annual Scholarship and Academic Awards night held at the CCHS auditorium. Newly-elected Student Body President Humphrey Arata acted as master of ceremonies for the evening.
Principal Tim Spencer and CCHS Vice Principal Reema Pulsifer presented some of the awards, including academic letters to 26 juniors and 39 seniors who had achieved four consecutive semesters of a 3.5 grade point average or higher.
Superintendent Derild Parsons said it was awesome to see the wonderful achievements of so many students he has come to know over the years.
Scholarship Coordinator and Library Media Specialist Holly McPherson received a round of applause in recognition of her guidance and expertise for the senior class.
“This group of students worked tirelessly and made applying for scholarships their March mission,” McPherson said. “I put a lot on their shoulders with many deadlines every week of the month. They won many more state and national scholarships than in past years and those applications are difficult and time consuming. I’m proud of them for doing the hard work and competing against who knows how many people and securing some pretty impressive wins.”
McPherson’s daughter, Maggie, is a member of the 2024 graduating class and a recipient of multiple scholarships.
