Greenwave roundup: Koenig leads swim team at 3A regional

Senior Zachary Koenig qualified in all four swimming events, winning both the 100-yard freestyle and 100-yard breaststroke while helping lead both the 200 medley and freestyle relay teams punch their tickets for this week’s state meet in Las Vegas.

The Greenwave boys finished fourth overall with 165 points as Truckee won both the boys and girls divisions on Saturday at the Carson Aquatic Center. The Wolverines captured the boys title with 379 points, easily outpacing South Tahoe (245), and more than doubled up on South Tahoe in the girls division, winning the title 492-211. Fallon finished sixth in the girls with 115 points.

The state meet is Saturday at the Pavilion Center Pool in Las Vegas.

Koenig won the freestyle event in 49.01 seconds and breaststroke by 6 seconds, finishing in 58.41. The 200-medley relay team of William McLean, Koenig, Michael Liston and Brody Reynolds finished fourth in 1:55.57. The 200-freestyle relay team, which consisted of the same group, took third after swimming the event in 1:48.30.

In the individual events, Liston finished sixth in the 100-butterfly in 1:07.81, about 5 seconds from qualifying for state. Reynolds finished sixth in the 100 free in 59.59, about 5 seconds from going to state, as well. McLean finished sixth in the 500 free in 6:29.41.

Kage Oyler finished seventh in the 100-backstroke in 1:19.09 as the top-four teams were 1:03.20 or faster. Reynolds finished seventh in the 100-breaststroke in 1:16.82.

For the girls, senior Gracie Cosman is the only qualifier after a pair of relay teams finished one spot away from going to state.

Cosman’s preliminary time in the 200-individual medley would have been good enough for first in the finals, but Cosman took second in 2:32.32. Cosman also took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.79, coming almost 4 seconds away from winning.

The 200-freestyle relay team of Cosman, Evelyn Lott, Joclyn Miller and Katelen Helton finished 1.2 seconds from finishing fourth to qualify for state after finishing the event in 1:57.81. The same group swam the 200-medley relay as they finished less than 3 seconds from finishing fourth. The team took fifth in 2:13.77 after North Valleys took the fourth and final spot.

In the individual events, Lott finished sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:44.28, needing to shave 7 seconds to qualify for state. Helton finished seventh in the 100 backstroke in 1:12.62, about 3 seconds of qualifying for state.


TRACK

Three individuals qualified for this week’s state tournament after Fallon finished eighth in the girls with 20 points and ninth in the boys with 38.5 in the Northern 3A regional meet at Carson High School last weekend.

Truckee won both the boys and girls divisions with 92 and 129 points.

Jessalyn Lewis and Bransyn Wright each qualified for state in two events, while Edwin Ugalde advanced in one. The top-four finishers qualified for state, which is Friday and Saturday at Carson High School.

Jessalyn Lewis finished second in the triple jump at 34 feet, 2 inches shy of tying for first, and took fourth in the long jump at 15-1.25. The winning mark was 16-6.25.

Wright finished second in the triple jump at 40 feet, 8.5 inches, and third in the high jump with a mark of 6-3, which was 2.25 inches shy of first.

Edwin Ugalde finished second in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 59.05 seconds, but ended seventh in the 400 in 52.36, falling 1.28 seconds short of advancing to state.

In the long jump, Kaeden Simpson needed 3 more inches to take fourth but he finished with a leap of 18-11 to end in fifth.

Nathaniel Bianchi was seventh in the triple jump at 37-7.75, and in the high jump, Simpson finished seventh at 5-6 and needed 4 more inches to advance to state.

Edmond Allyn needed to hit 12-3 to advance in the pole vault, but he beat his 9-6 record by a foot to finish sixth.

In the discus, Jacob Sorensen led the team with a 15th-place finish at 115 feet followed by Garrett Helton at 115-9, Sebastian Escartin at 95-10 and Alec Lecker at 91.

Jarrett Ugalde Torres finished 12th in the 1600 in 11:24, followed by Jackson Barbee, 11:24; and Leoo Arcoraci, 13:07.74. The cutoff time (fourth place) to go to state was 10:15.43.

The boys 4x100 relay team needed to shave about a second off its 45.57 time to go to state but finished seventh. The 4x800 team also took seventh, falling 14 seconds short of advancing after completing the race in 8:55.15.

Sofia Basurto was 0.34 seconds short of going to state in the 100 hurdles after running the race in 17.46 to finish fifth.

Lewis finished seventh in the shot put at 28-5 followed by Katelyn Glinka at 27 feet and Madison Lewis at 26-7.5.

Rylie Guerrero finished 13th in the pole vault with a mark of 5-6 with the fourth-place mark being 8-6.

The girls 4x100 relay team clocked a 54.54.


GOLF

The Greenwave boys golf team won the Northern 3A regular-season title earlier this month, finishing with 77.5 points to qualify the entire team for this week’s two-day state tournament, which began on Tuesday at the Mountain Falls Golf Club in Pahrump.

At the Dayton Valley Golf Course last Monday, Fallon tied with Elko for first at 332 strokes as Pakela Malama-Gomes led the team with a score of 79. Colin Shishido finished with a score of 81 followed by Ron Lee and Dierks Hammon at 86. Wyatt Sorensen carded a 90 followed by Drake Reid at 91.

In the final tournament of the year, Fallon edged Elko by one stroke to win at the Sierra Sage Golf Course in Stead.

Shishido led Fallon, which finished with a score of 333, with a 79 while Hammon ended at 80. Malama-Gomes finished with an 83 followed by Lee and Sorensen at 91. Reid carded a 92.
