After fielding a team for the first time last season, the Oasis Academy baseball team fell short in its first trip to the postseason last week in Lovelock.

The No. 3 Bighorns lost to No. 2 Yerington, 6-3, before falling to No. 4 Incline, 9-6, on Friday. West Wendover won the Northern 2A championship over Yerington, 14-4, on Saturday.

Yerington led the entire game but Oasis Academy’s three-run fourth inning trimmed the deficit to one run. Yerington, though, scored one each in the fifth and sixth innings.

Matthew Bird tripled and drove in a run, James Thibodaux doubled and drove in one and Fenn Mackedon singled and had an RBI. Ryder McNabb also singled.

Bird pitched six innings, allowing nine hits and six earned runs.

The Bighorns had a 5-2 lead going into the fifth inning before the Highlanders scored seven runs in the final three innings.

Bird led the team with two hits, including a homer, and two RBIs, and Thibodaux, Michael Casey, AlexZander Sheldon-Davis and Benjamin Utz each drove in a run.

Zachary Budner pitched 3.2 innings, striking out three while giving up five earned runs. McNabb threw 3.1 innings and gave up no earned runs.

SOFTBALL

On the softball diamond, No. 3 Oasis Academy saw a similar fate, falling to the No. 2 team in the first game and then the No. 4 team in the consolation bracket. The Bighorns dropped a 12-5 contest to Yerington on Friday before falling to Battle Mountain, 15-3.

Oasis Academy led 3-1 before Yerington tied the game in the second inning and then built another lead, 5-3, in the fourth before the Lions scored nine unanswered runs.

Mackenzie Bryant led the team with two hits and three RBIs, and Emma Lewis and Dahlila Creer each drove in a run.

Kirsten Detomasi struck out three while giving up eight earned runs, seven hits and 10 walks.

Battle Mountain scored 13 runs in the first two innings before adding its final two to end the game in the fifth.

Phynex Hunt drove in all three runs for Oasis Academy as she finished with two hits. Lewis, Detomasi and Lorena Rios also had a hit.

Taylynn Maynez and Detomasi combined pitching efforts with Detomasi striking out seven in four innings while allowing seven earned runs, two hits and 10 walks. Maynez gave up four earned runs across six hits and had no walks.

GOLF

The Oasis Academy boys golf team qualified one for this week’s state tournament at the Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.

Tyler Siebecker finished tied for sixth overall but fifth from non-qualifying state teams after shooting a 101 at the par-72 Dayton Valley golf course last week in the 2A East regional. The top-five golfers outside of the top-two teams, White Pine and Wells, advanced to state. The Bighorns finished nine strokes from second with a 441 total.

Siebecker competed in the two-day state tournament, which began on Tuesday.

Elijah Jones finished 11th with a score of 111 followed by Benton Snow, 113, and Dallin Sorensen, 116.
