Fire hydrant testing
The Fallon/Churchill Volunteer Fire Department will be testing the city’s fire hydrants through May 24 during the evenings.
According to the city, it’s common for tap water to become discolored during this process due to the unusually high flows in the piping system that stir up small amounts of naturally occurring sediment. The discolored water has been properly treated and is safe to use.
If the water is heavily discolored, the city said users may wish to refrain from drinking from the tap or washing clothe on a temporary basis. Discolored water can usually be removed by flushing cold water from an outdoor hose bib or an interior bathtub fixture for several minutes.
The city said this is important annual testing ensures the system is functioning properly and is also one of many requirements the fire department completes in order to maintain its ISO Class 1 rating. This rating can help reduce local homeowners insurance rates.
For information contact the Fallon City Clerk’s Office at 775-423-5104.
