Fourth of July parade

Fallon’s traditional Fourth of July parade begins at 10 a.m. featuring this year’s theme of “Fallon Forward.”

The red, white and blue window decorating contest is open to all businesses in Churchill County. Entries are due June 28 and windows must be decorated by July 1. The best use of theme and voter’s choice award winners will each receive a $100 cash prize.

The pie bake-off will be held June 29 at the Cottage Schools, 255 E. Stillwater Ave. Pie drop off is 10 a.m.-noon with judging at 1 p.m.

The annual Bed Races at the Maine Street fountain begin after the parade approximately at noon. Entry form and $30 fee must be submitted by June 21. Entrants must register in a racing group, either 18 years of age and older or ages 13-17. Winners will receive bragging rights, a trophy and a cash prize.

Bark in the Park 5K June 8

The 17th Annual Bark in the Park 5K walk/run will take place on Saturday, June 8 from 8 a.m.- 4 p.m. Registration for the 5k is from 7:15 a.m. to 7:30 a.m. at the Churchill County Fairgrounds. The walk/run begins at 8 a.m.

The registration fee is $30 per person if you preregister online by June 1 and $40 on the day of the event. You can download the registration form by going to www.capsnevada.org to pre-register. Dogs walk for free but must be on a leash.

CCHS Class of 1964 seeks information on members

The Churchill County High School Class of 1964 is planning its 60th reunion this August and is seeking information on class members.

The class will host a gathering Friday, Aug. 16 and will participate in events at Oats Park on Saturday, Aug. 17. Information including members’ physical and email addresses and phone numbers may be sent to imellig@cccomm.net or jnl@cccomm.net. To be most useful, status is requested by July 1.

Others who are not 1964 members but wish to attend are encouraged to notify the planning committee. Members will meet at 5 p.m. on Aug. 16. The next day, class graduates are encouraged to participate in events organized by the Churchill County Reunion Committee.

Class members and their guests will be honored Aug. 17 at Oats Park. The local planning group includes Gary Imelli, Lynn Briggs, Ron and Maxine Shane, Lonne Fudge Sheldon, and Sandra and Don Mello.

Evening with the Arts

Help the Churchill Arts Council, friends and community celebrate the arts. This year's Evening with the Arts Gala is a costumed cocktail party at the Oats Park Art Center. Join the Arts Council for an evening under the stars with live music, art auction, hors d'oeuvres and beverages.

The gala is June 8 from 5:30-9 p.m. An auction catalogue twill be posted online by May 31.

Churchill County Library closed

The Churchill County Library will be closed from May 24-31.

New museum hours

The Churchill County Museum is now open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sundays.

Pennington Life Center

Plenty of good eats at the Pennington Life Center: All are welcome to partake. Lunch served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $6 for those under age 60 and a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and older.

USDA funding

Funding is available from USDA Rural Development Nevada for nonprofits, tribes, colleges and universities to create revolving loan fund programs and support training and technical assistance for rural microentrepreneurs and microenterprises.

Changes to state minimum wage

The Nevada Office of the Labor Commissioner is announcing changes that will impact Nevada’s minimum wage beginning July 1.

Assembly Bill 456, passed in 2019, increased the minimum wage in increments of 75 cents annually over a five-year period. The final increase effective July 1, 2024, will bring Nevada’s minimum wage to $12 per hour.

Nevada Ballot Question 2, passed by Nevada voters in November 2022, eliminated the two-tier minimum wage system which provided a reduction in the required minimum wage if an employer offered qualified health benefits. Unless otherwise exempted by law, the $12 minimum wage applies to all employees in the State of Nevada.

An increase in the minimum wage will also increase the daily overtime rates, except for those employees exempted from overtime requirements under NRS 608.018.
