By Superintendent Curry’s invitation we yesterday went to witness the working of the Carson Branch Mint machinery which, in the afternoon, had been set in motion for “a trial trip.” Brand new as it all is, it worked like the “works” of a watch — everything smooth, regular and comparatively noiseless. The engine is a model of nice construction and other machines attest the accuracy of their make and adjustment by delicacy of movement which is surprising to behold.

Yesterday a carload of Japanese passed through this city on their way to Mound House, where they will be employed in the reconstruction of the C.&C. R.R. The work has been let by contract and the parties taking the contract are evidently not going to let the grass grow under their feet. The grading is to be done by the Japanese and Greeks as much have been employed along the line.

An Indian weather prophet: Captain Zach, a Piute, who is said to have kicked up his heels for more than 80 summers being questioned in regard to the weather of the coming winter said this winter may be one way of two. If you take the warm road, you’ll be warmer. If you take cold road, it will be the worst winter you’ll ever see.

The Reno Rumpers: The Rump ticket people held a meeting in Reno a few evenings since with the aid of Nixon’s money. Cene Howell stayed behind the scenes and whenever he wanted to start some applause he hammered on the stage with a club. The audience got tired and left. Howell did not know they were gone and continued to pound on the stage until a stagehand stopped him. The ticket is the scorn end and a general laughingstock all over the state.

Once more for the old flag! By Amer Sheen
“Air: ‘Rally Round the Flag.’
The battle eve has come
And we rally once again,
To cheer our party on to victory;
We are mustered here tonight
To make ready for the fight,
Which shall crown our battle flags with glory…

Election returns: During the past three days the Appeal has endeavored to give the people of Carson the fullest possible election returns. The results are scrambled up from all parts of the Union and in many cases the dispatch is simply a reflex of the political opinions of the sender. Names of towns get mixed up with names of candidates, and a man’s name gets so twisted as to be unrecognizable. The appeal typographical force has been up all night for nearly a week, and a writing man has to be hired with a long stick to go around and wake them up every half hour.

Man killed: Jim Stewart, desperado, who killed a man at the Glenbrook, was killed by R.H. Scott, at Tahoe City. Scott is a barkeeper for Campbell & Forbes at Tahoe. Stewart had frequently threatened to kill Scott and on the night in question persisted in entering the said saloon, seeking a fight with Scott. The result will be prompt acquittal, for, the Stewart was found without arms upon him, his threats and though well-known desperate character, justify any man to kill him.
