Diabetes is one of the most prevalent health challenges in the United States, affecting millions of Americans every day. According to the American Diabetes Association, more than 37 million people across the country are living with diabetes, with type 2 diabetes accounting for over 90% of these cases.
For many, managing diabetes is an ongoing journey, while for others, understanding how to prevent it is a priority.
As November marks American Diabetes Month, Carson Tahoe Health is stepping up to raise awareness and offer the community valuable resources to combat this chronic disease.
On Saturday, Nov. 9, from 9 a.m. to noon, Carson Tahoe Health will host a Diabetes Health Fair at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center.
This free event is designed to educate, empower, and provide attendees with the tools they need to either manage their diabetes or take preventative steps to avoid developing the disease.
Whether you are newly diagnosed, at risk, or simply want to learn more, this event is for you.
Attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities and educational sessions that are not only informative but also enjoyable for the entire family.
We have structured the event to offer valuable insights through expert talks, hands-on learning, and interactive stations, all geared toward raising awareness about diabetes and how to manage it effectively.
Some highlights of the event include:
Expert Lectures: Participants can attend sessions led by local endocrinologists and other healthcarespecialists. These professionals will share the latest advancements in diabetescare, explore treatment options, and discuss the role of lifestyle changes in managing or preventing diabetes.
Interactive Stations: Several booths will be set up to showcase the newest technologies and approaches to diabetes care, including blood glucose monitoring devices, insulin pumps, and foot care solutions. Additionally, heart health, mental wellness, physical therapy, and nutrition experts will provide valuable guidance on maintaining a healthy lifestyle—critical components for those living with diabetes.
Fun Activities and Giveaways: In addition to the educational offerings, we want attendees to enjoy the event. There will be games and giveaways throughout the morning, ensuring that the Diabetes Health Fair is not only insightful but also engaging for all ages.
To understand the significance of this event, it is essential to grasp the gravity of diabetes as a public health issue.
Type 2 diabetes, the most common form, occurs when the body either doesn’t produce enough insulin or becomes resistant to it, causing elevated blood sugar levels.
This can lead to long-term complications such as heart disease, stroke, kidney damage, and nerve damage. Many of these complications can be prevented or delayed by taking action early—through lifestyle changes or medical intervention.
The good news is that type 2 diabetes is largely preventable, and manageable if caught early.
Small but significant changes, like incorporating more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains into your diet and committing to regular physical activity, can make a world of difference.
The Diabetes Health Fair is an ideal venue to explore these preventative measures in more detail and learn how to incorporate them into your daily routine.
Carson Tahoe Health is deeply committed to the well-being of the community, and our efforts extend far beyond this one-day event.
To provide continued support, we offer monthly diabetes support groups where participants can share their experiences, ask questions, and receive encouragement from both peers and healthcare providers.
These meetings take place on the second Wednesday of each month at the Carson Senior Center from 1-2 p.m., and on the third Wednesday of the month at the Dayton Medical Center during the same time.
Additionally, on Thursday, Nov. 14, from 4-5 p.m., we will be offering a free community presentation at the Carson Tahoe Regional Medical Center in recognition of World Diabetes Day with a focus on evidence-based nutrition to improve diabetes management.
We encourage everyone to take advantage of these wonderful opportunities.
Whether you’re seeking guidance for managing diabetes or want to learn more about preventing it, the Diabetes Health Fair on Nov. 9 is the perfect event to attend.
Additionally, the fair will offer resources on Medicare benefits, financial services including guidance on advanced directives, and on-site schedulers to assist with appointment scheduling.
These resources provide support to help you navigate your health and well-being. Knowledge is power, and by educating ourselves and our loved ones, we can reduce the risk of diabetes and enhance the overall health of our community.
