First Judicial District Court Judge Kristin Luis, Department 2, recently completed the General Jurisdiction: Advanced program, a two-week course designed for district court judges at the National Judicial College, city officials said in a news release.

“The course provides judges with the core competencies of their profession and builds a solid foundation in courtroom management, judicial ethics and discretion, evidence, case management, judicial security, and decision-making,” the release said. “Graduates can earn credit hours toward a Master of Judicial Studies degree.”

“For many judges, the transition from bar to bench is very swift, and there is no ‘how-to guide’ available,” said Benes Z. Aldana, retired judge and president of the National Judicial College.

During the General Jurisdiction: Advanced course, judges learn from top faculty recruited from the judiciary and subject matter experts from around the country, the release said.

“I have attended numerous courses conducted by the National Judicial College and have a great appreciation for their commitment to judicial education. I am committed to continuing education to enhance my judicial skills in providing the best public service to Carson City and Storey County,” Luis said.

Luis’ attendance at the course was supported by the Nevada Supreme Court, Administrative Office of the Courts.

Luis was appointed to First Judicial District Court by Gov. Joe Lombardo last year to fill the unexpired term of Judge James Wilson.
