Fashion show to feature CAPS guests

The Fabulous Dog Fashion Show featuring CAPS guests will be Nov. 16, 1-4 p.m., at the Fallon Theater, 71 S. Maine St. Cost is $20 per person, $30 per couple, children are free. Proceeds benefit CAPS. Busy month at the Churchill Arts Center

The fall film series features a visit from your favorite Godfather on Nov. 15 and Nov. 22 with each beginning at 7 p.m.

“The Godfather” movies chronicle the Corleone family under patriarch Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando) from 1945 to 1955.

It focuses on the transformation of his youngest son, Michael Corleone (Al Pacino), from reluctant family outsider to ruthless mafia boss. Starring Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Richard Castellano, Robert Duvall, Sterling Hayden, John Marley, Richard Conte, and Diane Keaton.

“The Godfather II” (1974) on Nov. 15 is both a sequel and a prequel to the 1972 film by presenting parallel dramas.

“Godfather III” (1990) on Nov. 22 is the third and final installation of the trilogy.

Each movie is free for members and season ticket holders. The cost for nonmembers is $5 for each showing. Tickets are available at the box office on the night of screening or call the Churchill Arts Council at 775-423-1440.

The box office, Art Bar and galleries open at 6 p.m.

Arts exhibits

The Harry Wilson exhibit on photographs from the 1960s opened Nov. 11. Most of Wilson’s photographs were in a one-person exhibition at the de Young Museum in San Francisco in 1969.

This exhibit was most recently shown at the Monterey Museum of Art during 2019.

The 1960s saw a nationwide explosion of interest in fine art photography, and in San Francisco. The reception for the artist is Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. in the Kirk Robertson Gallery, Oats Park Arts Center. The artist’s website is at HarryWilsonPhoto.com.

Sapira Cheuk’s exhibit in the E.L. Wiegand Gallery also opens Nov. 11. She is an ink painter and installation artist. Born in Hong Kong and based in Las Vegas, her work often uses a blend of Sumi and India ink, symbolizing the mixture of her identities.

Cheuk works for the Nevada Arts Council, serves as the Art Editor for the museum of Americana and teaches at the College of Southern Nevada. The exhibition presentation is Jan. 18 from 5-7:30 p.m.


American Legion needs volunteers

Fallon’s American Legion Fred W. Anderson Post 16 needs volunteers for its Thanksgiving meals outreach.

The post prepares, packs and delivers meals to the county’s seniors in need as well as opening its dining room to the community for a homemade Thanksgiving meal.

Spread the joy with the American Legion.

Come to the Post at 90 N. Ada St., on Nov. 28. Volunteer times are between 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Fallon Elks Lodge

The Fallon Elks Lodge 2239 has several events planned for November in addition to its veterans’ lunch.

• Vendors are needed for the Fallon Elks Craft Fair fundraiser.

The craft fair is Nov. 16 from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. The first table is $25 and the second table is $20. For questions or to reserve a table or booth, call 775-423-2239.

• The annual Elks Hoop Shoot is Dec. 7 at 3 p.m. at the Churchill County Middle School gymnasium.

The Elks Hoop Shoot is a free throw contest open to children from 88 to 13 years old. In 2023, the local Elks Lodge had participants advancing to the both the regional and state championship contests.

VFW Christmas dinner

The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1002 in Fallon invites residents to a free Christmas dinner on Dec. 21 from 2-6 p.m. at the VFW banquet hall.

The VFW is located at 405 S. Maine St.


Churchill County Library

As the weather cools down, cozy up with new programming added to the old favorites at the Churchill County Library in November. The library will be closed Thursday through Saturday, Nov. 28-30 to observe the Thanksgiving holiday.

Special events:

New adult programming starts this month.

A monthly adult crafting project is now on the library calendar. Come out on Nov. 14 at 4 p.m. to make a pie garland. Adult BYOB (book) Club begins Nov. 21 at 4 p.m. Bring a book you are reading or recently read.

Sen. Jacky Rosen’s office representative will be at the library Nov. 14 at 1 p.m. for “office hours.” Stop by and let the senator’s staff know what is on your mind.

Reading with Rover also takes place Nov. 14 at 3:30 p.m. Come practice your reading skills on the best listeners and keep the book you choose to read! Geared to ages 6-11, but all are welcome.

Art in the Library! The Churchill County Museum’s recent exhibit “Shadow Catchers” features eight different photographers who either lived in Churchill County or photographed its natural beauty between the 1860s and 1980s. Catch this exhibit at the library.


Applications for EQIP Classic, EQIP IRA, and AMA programs due Nov. 22

The U.S Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service in Nevada is offering financial and technical assistance to help agricultural producers apply conservation practices through the Environmental Quality Incentives Program Classic and Inflation Reduction Act, and the Agricultural Management Assistance Program.

More than $16 million is available to producers through EQIP and AMA.

Applications for EQIP Classic, EQIP IRA, and AMA must be received by the local field office before 4 p.m. on Nov. 22. Any applications received after the deadline will be considered for funding during the next funding cycle.

EQIP is a voluntary, financial and technical assistance program providing funding to agricultural producers and non-industrial forest managers to address natural resource concerns and deliver environmental benefits such as improved water and air quality, conservation of ground and surface water, increased soil health and reduced soil erosion and sedimentation, improved or created wildlife habitat, and mitigation against drought and increasing weather volatility.
