Lyon County Clerk Staci Lindberg reported to the Board of County of Commissioners on Friday there were few issues during this year’s General Election. She gave an account of minimal wait times and a healthy voter turnout.
“The collaboration between the county and the state was amazing,” she said. “They provided training and the polls worked pretty flawlessly. Our biggest problem was with reporting. … We did have problems getting information out to the people.”
Lyon counted a total of 47,297 active registered voters. Total turnout was 33,617 (71.08%), with an Election Day turnout of 5,461 (16.24%), early turnout of 10,915 (32.47%) and mail turnout of 17,241 (51.29%). Lindberg said she enjoyed comparing the total turnout to 2022’s 54% as an improvement with about 10,000 more active registrations this year.
Lindberg said there were issues reported during the General Election. One was for a jail complaint in which a Lyon County resident was in a Churchill County jail and there were no resources available to provide the person in custody with a ballot.
“They did report that to the state,” Lindberg said. “They told him the process, and I couldn’t make it happen. They (the state) understood that and said they would work on similar processes and work on legislation to work on jail votes.”
The third issue came from a member of the Yerington Paiute Tribe who said the county was turning away voters, but Lindberg said the person did not present any identification or an address and could not be registered.
Other findings included a primary ballot that was submitted had to be rejected, and the county received two duplicate votes in which the person voted on Election Day but they also mailed in a ballot and workers accepted their in-person ballot, Lindberg said.
A Washoe ballot was received in a Lyon envelope and had to be sorted out, she reported.
Also, the county rejected 79 provisional ballots due to identification or lack of identification proof for residents.
“Fifty-three ballots were received from prior elections … and I would try to work closer with USPS (U.S. Postal Service) because we had a lot of people receiving duplicate ballots and they were actually from prior elections.”
Lyon also had 169 uncured signatures and had two precinct issues, which will be corrected next year, she said.
The commissioners thanked her and staff members for their diligence in the process. The canvass was approved 5-0.
