Following Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury's appointment by Gov. Joe Lombardo to First Judicial District Court Department 1, the Board of Supervisors will consider Chief Dep. District Attorney Garrit Pruyt, of the criminal division, as a replacement for the remaining term that expires Jan. 4, 2027.
The agenda for Thursday's meeting (which starts at 8:30 a.m.) was revised Wednesday, and the appointment was added to the agenda as an emergency item.
"Under NRS 252.060(4), the Board of Supervisors may appoint Mr. Pruyt on an interim or permanent basis," reads a staff report. "If the Board of Supervisors chooses to appoint Mr. Pruyt as Mr. Woodbury's interim replacement, Mr. Pruyt may not serve for more than 60 days or until a permanent replacement is appointed, whichever occurs first. See NRS 252.060(4)(b)(1).
"If, however, Mr. Pruyt is appointed as Mr. Woodbury's permanent replacement, he may serve the remainder or Mr. Woodbury's unexpired term which expires on Janaury 4, 2027, and the office must be placed on the ballot at the upcoming biennial election. See NRS 245.170."
Woodbury takes office Dec. 2.

Carson City District Attorney Jason Woodbury has been appointed district judge by Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo, according to a Tuesday news release.
Lombardo announced Woodbury as his selection to the First Judicial District Court, Department I.
“Jason’s commitment to his community is unparalleled, and I’m confident he will serve with integrity and honor, just as he always has as district attorney,” Lombardo said in the news release.
Woodbury was first elected district attorney in November 2014. Woodbury will replace Judge James Todd Russell, who retired in October.
“The First Judicial District holds a sacred place in my heart, and I will work hard to be worthy of the standard of excellence Judge Russell has set for this office,” Woodbury said in the release.
Woodbury also has served as deputy district attorney in the criminal and civil divisions of the Carson City District Attorney’s office and as a partner in a statewide law firm for over a decade. A Northern Nevada native, Woodbury earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Nevada, Reno and his law degree from the University of Utah.
