Trails and Tribulations

The Churchill County Museum’s newest temporary exhibit “Trails and Tribulations” is on display.

The exhibit shares information about the more than half a million pioneers who traveled the Overland Trail in the United States from 1841 until the opening of the transcontinental railroad in 1869.

“The exhibit features multiple hands-on activities to engage the senses and critical thinking skills,” curator Raeburn Sottile said. “It works both as an introduction for people who know nothing about life on the trail and has some fun trivia for experts.”

One section covers how the pioneers decided where in the west they wanted to go and how to travel there and includes a hands-on activity about what they could pack. A section about daily life on the trail features an example travel schedule and common potential dangers. Another section details the ways the emigrants could replenish supplies along their journey such as through the expensive trading posts, trading with the Indigenous peoples and hunting.

Snippets of personal journal entries from Margaret Fink, William H. Killgore, William Richard Brown, physician Jacob Bartholomew and also from Sarah Winnemucca’s autobiography, “Life Among the Paiutes” are posted to read.

The museum is located at 1050 S. Maine St. and the winter hours are Tuesday-Saturday 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday 10 a.m.-3 p.m.

Museum Chautauqua

The Churchill County Museum is bringing back the Chautauqua with more performers.

See the seven Chautauquans take on the personas of a few of Nevada’s pioneering spirits and share the stories of people who made great strides in our community.

Performance will be at the Fallon Theatre on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. As a member, general admission costs $10 and discounted admission (seniors, military, and children under 12) costs $7.50.

Churchill County Library

With autumn upon us, jump into a variety of free events and programming at the Churchill County Library in October.

 Special events:

• Rocks! This special program will be held on Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m. and led by Rachel Micander from the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology who will help attendees learn about rocks and minerals.

• Art in the Library. The Churchill County Museum’s recent exhibit “Shadow Catchers” features eight different photographers who either lived in Churchill County or photographed its natural beauty between the 1860s and 1980s. Catch this exhibit at the library in October.

• Senator Rosen’s office representative will be at the library Oct. 10 at 1 p.m. for “office hours.”

• Reading with Rover also takes place Oct.10 at 3:30 p.m. Come practice your reading skills on the best listeners and keep the book you choose to read! Geared to ages 6-11, but all are welcome.

• Elementary Book Club meets Oct. 18 at 3:30 p.m. in the Library Annex for those in grades 3 through 5. Reserve your spot at: bit.ly/CCLElementaryBookClub

No Hill Hundred

Fernley Republican Women

The Fernley Republican Women will meet at the Fernley Senior Center, 105 Lois Lane, Fernley, on Oct. 15. A light meal will be served at 6 p.m. and the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.

Guest speaker will be Melissa Clement, Nevada Right to Life. She will update the group on Question 6 on the November ballot. Clement is a graduate of Reno High School and holds a bachelor’s of science in marketing and a master’s degree in political science from the University of Nevada. She represents Nevada on the board of directors of the National Right to Life Committee.

The FRW’s Caring for America Program collects non-perishable foods for the Fernley Food Bank and the Armed Forces/Homeland Security Program collects cleaning supplies, food and personal care items, along with donations of funds, for the Veterans Guest House in Reno.

Pennington Life Center

Stop by the Pennington Life Center in September for the many activities planned.

Cards, crafts, exercise, games, discussion on voting, welfare representative available to answer questions, Medicare representative and computer assistance are just a few of the activities and resources available at the Pennington Life Center.

Lunch served 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. weekdays. Cost is $6 for those under age 60 and a suggested donation of $3 for those 60 and older.
