Oasis roundup: Regionals season opens with girls golf

The Oasis Academy girls golf team capped the regular season and competed in the Class 2A West League Girls Golf Tournament on Wednesday at the Toiyabe Golf Club in Washoe Valley.

Results are available online and will appear in next week’s print edition.

The top-three teams and top-six individuals from non-qualifying teams in the tournament will advance to next week’s state tournament. The best four scores count toward the team score from the one-day, 18-hole event at the course north of Carson City.

This year’s state tournament is at the Ruby View Golf Course in Elko on Oct. 16 and 17.

This year’s team is coached by Dave Halloran and includes players Victoria Hopkins, Emma Papada, Olivia Kutansky, Meirra Cavanaugh, Stevie Hiskett, Nicole Hopkins and Bailey Beebe.


VOLLEYBALL

After losing its first two matches last week, the Bighorns volleyball team came back on Saturday to stun West Wendover in five sets.

Oasis Academy dug out of a 2-1 hole to win the final two games over the Wolverines, 18-25, 25-18, 22-25, 27-25 and 15-9, at the city-county gym. West Wendover swept Oasis Academy last month.

Grace Laca led the team in kills with six, Kaylin Guthrie had five, and Hazel Mackedon and Reese Laca each had three. Guthrie’s serving paced the Bighorns as the senior led with seven aces followed by Reese Laca’s five.

Grace Laca finished with four aces followed by Dahlila Creer and Kiera McCoy, who both had three. Laca also had a team-high five digs and one block, and Abby Bird added two digs. Creer dished up nine assists and Reese Laca had six.

Earlier in the week, Oasis Academy fell to Coral Academy, 25-8, 25-20 and 27-25, in Reno.

Grace Laca led the team with five kills, Mackedon had three and Taylor Hyde added a pair. Guthrie led in aces with seven followed by two each from McCoy and Grace Laca, who also had the team’s only block and dig.

Creer led the team in assists with seven and Reese Laca had two.

In Friday’s 20-25, 25-19, 25-9 and 26-24 loss to Battle Mountain on Friday in Fallon, Grace Laca led the team with five kills, and Hyde and Guthrie each had two. Laca and Hyde also served two aces apiece, and Guthrie, Reese Laca, Creer and McCoy each had one.

Reese Laca had the team’s only two blocks, while she and Bird each had two digs. Guthrie, Laca and Kirsten Detomasi each had one dig. Creer led the team in assists with eight and Reese Laca had three.


CROSS COUNTRY

The Bighorns cross country team competed in Friday’s Reed Invitational at Shadow Mountain Park in Sparks.

Leonidas Arcoraci led the team in the varsity boys division with a time of 21 minutes, 23 seconds, followed by Jay Frederick, 27:52, and Chase Ackerman, 28:21. In the varsity girls division, Kayla Greenberg finished the race in 31:15 followed by Beatriz Hallberg in 31:29.
