A Dayton man who became commander for the Nevada Army National Guard Land Component in September was promoted Thursday to the rank of brigadier general.
With the promotion, Randy Lau becomes the third current Nevada Army National Guard general joining Brig. Gen. D. Rodger Waters, the state’s incoming adjutant general, and Brig. Gen. Troy Armstrong, the assistant adjutant general who lives in Las Vegas.
“I want to thank our leadership and the state of Nevada for their faith in my ability to promote to the rank of brigadier general,” Lau said.
In his current position, Lau is the commanding officer of more than 3,200 soldiers who live across the Silver State.
Lau has served in numerous commands during his career, including a position in the California Army National Guard’s 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) in 2021-22. He has also held a number of positions in the Nevada Army Guard including more than two decades assigned to the 1st Squadron, 221st Cavalry.
From 2023-24 Lau deployed with the 40th Infantry Division to Camp Arifjan, Kuwait as the Division G3. He was responsible for training, operations, plans, force development and modernization.
