A brief statement about your platform
As District Judge, my foundation must always be the law. In my approach, I ensure all parties to a case have an opportunity to have their voice heard and when decisions are made, the reasoning is explained. I have and will put the safety and the needs of this community first. Having worked in the court system for many years, I know that making changes to the system is complicated and often costly. Access to the courts is an important issue. Electronic filing systems are discussed as a method of assisting parties with access to the court. While I support electronic filing, it comes at a significant cost and also has to be implemented correctly, or it may reduce access rather than increase it. One way I want to improve access is by streamlining the court rules so that they are easier to understand and follow. This will reduce confusion, frustration, and it will promote fairness by holding all parties to the same standard and does not come with a significant cost to taxpayers. I will continue to work with our court stakeholders to find improvements and ensure that the rights of all parties are protected.
What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?
As District Judge, I use the legal knowledge and experience I have gained as both an attorney and a judge to address the people and the cases that come before the court. It is important for a District Judge to have experience making decisions, communicating with parties in stressful circumstances, and understanding the complexities of the system. I am the only candidate who has judicial experience. Judicial experience is important because it gives me the insight and perspective to make fair and just decisions in complex cases every day. I was the first judge in Nevada to hear a Domestic Battery Misdemeanor Jury Trial. I have presided over multiple specialty courts in the First Judicial District including drug courts and mental health court. I have served as a Justice of the Peace, Juvenile Master, and now a District Judge. Each of those positions has been challenging in their own way. At Juvenile Court, I decided cases that were about the most important aspects of many people’s lives, their children. At Justice Court, the bulk of my time was making decisions that impacted community safety — conducting bail hearing, addressing requests for search warrants, conducting preliminary hearings, determining issuance of protection orders, and addressing misdemeanor criminal cases. I also heard and decided small claims actions and evictions. Having served as a judicial officer for over 10 years, I am the only candidate with the experience making decision on behalf of this community. I am the only candidate with the internal knowledge of how the system works as a whole. I am the candidate who was chosen by a bipartisan selection commission for consideration of appointment. I was appointed by the Governor in January, and I have served faithfully as your District Judge ever since.

Record of service:
I have served our community in my work for the Nevada Attorney General’s office, and
multiple District Attorney offices, as a person responsible for keeping bad people off the
streets. I have prosecuted over 40 criminal jury trials, everything from drug to murder
cases, as well as crimes against children and older adults. I’ve served as a teacher, with
cadets at the Peace Officers Standards and Training academy and currently teach at

civil cases, like recently spearheading the State’s opioids litigation, which has recovered
over $1.1 billion to help families and communities address the epidemic, save lives, and
restore hope. I have practiced in numerous Nevada and federal courts. I have drafted
state laws, county and city laws, thousands of legal documents, and have been a
contributing author to a published book. As a District Judge, I will bring the wisdom I
have gained through my experience to the bench. I am the candidate with the experience
our community needs!

I hold a Juris Doctor degree from California Western School of Law and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Wisconsin. I am an active member of the Nevada State

Briefly describe the core duties of the position you are running for:
A District Judge handles a wide variety of legal issues, from criminal to family to business law. They not only need to be fair and impartial, a truly qualified District Judge must have broad legal experience.
A brief statement about your platform:
As a judge, beyond running an efficient and effective courtroom and ruling fairly and impartially, I will be focused on improving access to the court, implementing electronic filing, establishing family centered custody and divorce programs, creating a business court, starting a mental health court, re-evaluating the drug court, and promoting fairness and justice for all of Carson City and Storey County.
What makes you the most qualified candidate for this position?
I want to share a quick story with you. Recently, I finished a presentation and a woman came up to me, she was very emotional, and she said “I want to thank you.” She told me she runs a center that helps people, especially women who are pregnant or have children. She said the opioid settlements and funding that I have spearheaded at the Attorney General’s Office are going to help a lot of people. She handed me a booklet, and as I turned the pages, I saw all of these faces of different women who she had helped because of the settlement funding. These opioids settlements are bringing in over 1.1 billion dollars to the State, because of companies’ deceptive and misleading practices. These settlements are making a huge difference in many lives, and I was able to help achieve this huge win because of my experience with business law. I bring this up because I am the only candidate with the breadth of experience to fairly and efficiently deal with all of the different issues that come before the court from family law, to criminal law, to business law and business court. I am the only candidate with experience practicing in all of these areas. As people from different walks of life, and different needs, come before the court, I am the only candidate that has the breadth and depth of experience to help all of these people, not just some of them.
