The Bighorns girls golf team qualified two to this week’s state tournament.
Meirra Cavanaugh and Olivia Kutansky finished in the top eight in last Wednesday’s Class 2A West Region Girls Golf Championship at the Toiyabe Golf Course (par 72). Cavanaugh carded an 89 to take fourth, five strokes from the leader, while Kutansky finished eighth with a 106. Emma Papada missed the state cut after finishing with a 137.
North Tahoe won the team tournament with a score of 407 over Incline, which finished with a 442. Oasis Academy was one golfer shy of being in the team standings.
The state tournament is Wednesday and Thursday at the Ruby View Golf Course in Elko.
VOLLEYBALL
The Oasis Academy volleyball team lost a pair of five-set matches in Fallon last week before being swept at North Tahoe.
Oasis Academy dropped to 4-12 in the Northern 2A with two matches left in the season.
The Bighorns held a 2-1 edge over Sierra Lutheran last Monday before falling 13-25, 25-20, 25-20, 18-25 and 10-15 at the city-county gym.
Grace Laca led the team in kills with eight while Hazel Mackedon added four, and Reese Laca and Dahila Creer each had two. Kaylin Guthrie led in aces with four, and Grace Laca and Kiera McCoy each had three.
Laca led the team in blocks with four and digs with five, while Taylor Hyde had three digs. Creer finished with 11 assists and Reese Laca had four.
Unlike the first match of the week, Oasis Academy battled from being down 2-1 sets to force a fifth. Coral Academy, though, defeated Oasis Academy, 25-21, 25-19, 21-25, 19-25 and 15-8, on Wednesday in Fallon.
Grace and Reese Laca each had four kills, and Mackedon and Guthrie each added three. Guthrie posted a team-high six aces, Grace Laca had five and Creer added four. Laca also had the team’s lone block to go with her team-high four digs.
Guthrie finished with three digs and Abby Bird had two. Creer dished nine assists and Reese Laca had four.
On Saturday, North Tahoe swept Oasis Academy 25-6, 25-13 and 25-11 in Tahoe City, Calif.
Grace Laca finished with three kills followed by Guthrie with two and Reese Laca with one. Guthrie had the team’s only ace and Grace Laca had the team’s only block. Bird led the team with three digs and Creer dished four assists.
The Bighorns end the season next Monday against Yerington.
