Regionals roundup: Greenwave tennis, golf compete in tournaments

The Greenwave tennis teams will have several players competing in this weekend’s Northern 3A singles and doubles tournament at the Tahoe Donner Tennis Center in Truckee.

Fallon qualified one singles player and two doubles teams on the girls’ side, while the boys team will have one singles player and one doubles team.

The top-four advance to next week’s state tournament.

In the singles, which begin at 8:30 with the round of 16, Riggin Stonebarger will face No. 6 Liam Gillespie of Truckee in the boys bracket while Angela Gonzales will compete against South Tahoe’s Gabby Lancellotti. The boys winner advances to take on either No. 3 Ethan McCormick (Truckee) or Aaron Furumoto (Hug) at 12:30 p.m., while the girls winner will face either Truckee’s Autumn Strusinski or Sparks’ Dhruvi Bhakta at 2:30 p.m.

In the doubles, Fallon’s only seeded entry, No. 8 Ashlyn Jimenez and Jeana Lee, will face South Tahoe’s Greta Lynch and Piper Tennaci in the round of 16. The winner will take on either North Valleys’ Elizabeth Ramirez and Ivonaka Williams, the top seed, or Sparks’ Carla Grimm and Hillary Cerda in the quarterfinals.

Eva Grondin and Kynzlee Kratka will battle Truckee’s Sophia Killian and Riley Killen, the No. 2 seed, in the round of 16 with the winner facing North Valleys’ Julianna Sanchez and Genevieve Ramirez, the No. 7 seed, or Wooster’s Alba Ramos and Paloma Dominguez.

The round of 16 starts at 11:30 a.m. on Friday followed by the quarterfinals at 2:30 p.m.

Misael Alcantar-Vera and Jesus Sanchez will take on No. 5 Ricky Pacheco and Aayan Sheriff of Hug at 9:30 p.m. with the winner to face either Wooster’s Kaison Fong and Lester Torres Mariscal, or No. 4 Alec Fitzmyers and Ciaran Phillips of Truckee at 12:30 p.m.

The semifinals for all boys and girls singles and doubles are Saturday at 10 a.m. followed by the championship and third-place bout at 1 p.m.


GIRLS GOLF

On the brink of advancing a team to the state tournament for the first time in school history, the Wave girls golf team came up short in last week’s final regular season tournaments.

Fallon placed fourth each in the Truckee and South Tahoe tournaments as South Tahoe came back to nip Fallon by half a point for the third and final spot to this week’s state tournament.

Fallon senior Charissa Chenoweth qualified for the state tournament in Dayton after finishing in the top-seven outside of Lowry, Truckee and South Tahoe. She finished as the sixth-best golfer in the Northern 3A with 41 points and was the second-best outside of the top-three qualifying teams.

In last Monday’s tournament at the Tahoe Donner Golf Course in Truckee, Fallon carded a 440 as Truckee won the event with a 381. South Tahoe finished in third by 24 strokes.

Chenoweth and Megan Johnson each led Fallon with a score of 105 followed by Rylie Guerrero with a 112. Madison Gregory finished with a 118 followed by Rochelle Prentice with a 132.

The next day at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course, Truckee won the tournament with a 364 while South Tahoe clinched the third playoff spot with a 386 for third. Fallon finished with a 437.

Johnson led the team with a 99 followed by Chenoweth with a 102. Guerrero carded a 113, Gregory finished with a 123 and Prentice had a 132.
