To the public of Carson: The undersigned have been contemplating the feasibility of introducing a Dancing School in Carson and have received such encouragement from many young ladies and gentlemen that they have determined to open a school. The principal object of the school is to introduce some new dances, viz.: The German, Prince Imperial, Horse Guards and Caledonians, also some fancy dances. The floor has been freshly waxed at Moore & Parkers, so it should be a first-class affair.

During the campaigns of 1894 and 1896, George S. Nixon was owner and editor of the Winnemucca Silver State newspaper. We publish a few extracts from his pen written in those stirring days that evidently tried George’s soul: The Silver State is not in any sense the organ of the strikers. Neither is it a lickspittle of corporations. It is not published as a policy newspaper and does not attempt to echo the sentiments of anyone but its editor. It is altogether opposed to strikes and boycotts by either the laboring or corporate classes. — Silver State of Aug. 17, 1894

The girl who made a big hit at the first Nevada day celebration 25 years ago plans to be on hand for the state’s 100th birthday this year. The former Betty McLean, now Mrs. Williams Lewis, was chosen queen of Nevada’s diamond jubilee celebration in 1939.

The Sutro Tunnel barbecue came off as per programme on Tuesday. Mr. Sutro struck the first pick into the face of the tunnel and Dan DeQuille put in the next one. It rained during the ceremony; but the good omen of a rainbow appeared just after. The barbecue was a failure, the roasting process being clumsily done.

A silence fell over the civic auditorium last night as a group of Carson City motel owners listened to the Carson City council approve a five percent room tax to raise funds for recreational facilities here.

Nevada’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate rose for the fourth consecutive month in September, to 8.5 percent, up from 8.2 percent in August. The rate one year ago was 9.1 percent.

Carson City Jockey Club. The committee appointed on subscriptions have had very good success in collecting money — having had subscribed something near $400. The committee suggests that the citizens who take an interest in the fall races, meet at the Magnolia this evening to take into consideration the manner of disposing the money subscribed. A full attendance of the gentlemen who take an interest in the races is required.

D.L. Bliss’ new cottage at Glenbrook will be finished in a couple of weeks. It will be two stories high, 50x70, decorated in the most elaborate style.

Adam Baey of Silver City was again arrested on the charge of killing F. Clemente’s and is now in jail at Dayton awaiting his preliminary hearing.

Former Gov. Charles Russell said today that Herbert Hoover was in his estimation, “one of the finest and greatest presidents we have ever had.” The former Republican governor and former Republican president were personal friends and had visited each other many times.
